GUIDE ON IKWETA SAFARI CAMP IN KENYA
Ikweta Safari Camp, with its close proximity of just two kilometers from the main portal to Meru National Park i.e. Murera Gate, is perfect for AfricanMecca guests vacationing in Kenya with the intention of spending their unforgettable holiday marveling at the many wildlife treasures of the country. This value camp takes its name from the Kiswahili word for "equator" and since it is located close to it, the name is very apt. The camp is characterized by modest living arrangements, friendly service and good, wholesome food cooked with ingredients from their own covered vegetable patch and from other local sources served in their restaurant, Two Zebras. The main house of Ikweta Safari Camp has high, thatched ceilings of doum palm, an indigenous tree. The main lounge area, bar and dining room are all included in the house decorated with natural-tone lanterns hanging from the roof. Comfortable wicker lounge furniture added to upholstered couches and wooden bench form a cozy nook to relax in. The dining area has tables and chairs fashioned out of lightly colored wood with table covers patterned with delicate African motifs (read more on where else to stay in Meru National Park). The wide patio outside also covered with thatch is a good vantage point to have your meals and take in the tranquility of your surroundings. The large swimming pool with deck chairs sheltered by umbrellas is another spot to laze. Take a languorous swim or spend a leisurely afternoon beside it with a good paperback.
The Ikweta Safari Camp has 10 tented rooms made of canvas with roofs of doum palm thatch. They are sited at short distances from each other so guests travelling in dreamland East Africa can have the privacy they need. The walls are a combination of canvas and mesh for the large windows. If you like, you can drop the canvas flaps to cover the windows or simply draw the curtains. The tents come with twin or double beds, a small writing desk, luggage rack and woven grass mats on the floor while wall hangings with vibrant African patterns add to the charm of the tent. Enter the tent by parting the canvas front or tie it back to allow the sights and scents of the Meru countryside. Or simply lounge on the private patio outside your tent, and since the tent faces east, you can watch the spectacular sunrises over Meru every morning. Every tent comes with its own en-suite bathroom with a distinct shower area and a counter with a mirror and wash basin. The camp also provides hot water for your use and electricity is powered by generators at certain times of the day. Spend your time on your wilderness tour in Meru exploring its rugged beauty by taking game drives in the early mornings or late afternoons. Custom-built safari vehicles with trained, experienced AfricanMecca guides on board will take you to see the many animals and birds of Meru, and you could also spot the Big Five of Africa, the lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard on a single day if lucky. You could also go on nature walks under the guidance of a trained naturalist, and Gatwe Hill with its awesome views is a good location to trek. Bird lovers will love this opportunity to view more than 300 species of birds Meru is known for. Your evenings on your authentic holiday in Kenya will be enlivened by the cultural displays of music and dance presented by members of the nearby community.
