Rusinga Island, Lake Victoria - Kenya

Rusinga Island lies is in the north-eastern corner of Lake Victoria, which is the largest lake in Africa, world's second largest freshwater lake and world's largest tropical lake, and the source of the mighty River Nile that flows all the way to Egypt and the Mediterranean.
Rusinga Island is in Kenyan waters, with a view of the beautiful mountainous region overlooking the lake. From a historical perspective Rusinga Island is the burial home of Kenya' s famous son: Tom Mboya.
The island is a hot spot for bird watchers with over 100 species recorded. The only accommodation on the island is Rusinga Island Lodge. Many nest in the gardens of Rusinga Island Lodge including a pair of fish eagles and the exotic double-toothed barbet. As for fishing possibilities, it is possible to troll for Nile Perch along the shore and to cast for tilapia either from the boat or the shore.
At Rusinga Island, you can walk to the site where in 1948 Mary Leakey discovered Proconsul heseloni, one of mans earliest ancestors, or continue to explore the surrounding hills or shorelines.
