WHERE TO STAY IN LAKE VICTORIA
Mfangano Island Camp features 6 cottages that are built from clay, thatch and other native materials. The roundish rondavel design with plenty of light and air creates a peaceful ambience to help you rejuvenate after a day of discovering the natural, historical and cultural assets of the island and lake. For your couple’s romantic trip to Kenya, we recommend the Honeymoon Suite, an enchanting cottage with incredible 360-degree views of the lake. Situated on the shoreline, your cottage gives you unfettered views of the active bird and small mammalian life that has made Lake Victoria a unique travel destination in East Africa. Awaken to the sounds of avi-fauna welcoming the day and waves gently lapping the shore that is just outside your door. Spend your days touring the lake, fishing villages and island, but also give yourself much-needed breaks to lounge on your private veranda as fishing dhows sail gently across the lake. The shaded main veranda and lawn invite you to savor every bite of the organically-prepared meals of Nile perch, freshly baked breads, sautéed vegetables and other mouth-watering dishes.
Rusinga Island Lodge is another island getaway that fits the needs of AfricanMecca guests desiring a tranquil vacation at Lake Victoria (read more on when is the best time to go). Here, 6 charming cottages feature elevated thatch roofs, private verandahs with lake and garden views, living and dressing areas, large en-suite bathrooms and one king-size or two queen-size beds. As a family-friendly accommodation, the lodge offers safe places for your little ones to roam and explore, and the staff are specially trained to engage youngsters in special activities. The cottages are situated on the same level, so guests with limited mobility can easily navigate between their cottages and common areas. Gardens on the property provide organic produce for your meals, which are served in a variety of locations, depending on the weather. A breakfast of fresh fruit, eggs, homemade cereal and pastries, sausage and other “English” options are typically served on the lawn. Lunch is served outdoors while dinner may be served by candlelight on the jetty, in the dining area or the gazebo.
