MATEMWE LODGE IN ZANZIBAR
Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Matemwe Lodge
The dream island of Zanzibar is one of the best destinations for an Indian Ocean beachfront holiday in Africa, thanks to its strategic location in the warm tropical environs off the coast of Tanzania and the gorgeous seaside of its northern section. To the northwest is Kendwa Beach, a favorite haunt of guests looking for a happening nightlife while the Nungwi Beach lies at the very tip of the island.
Matemwe Beach is on the northeast and is a premium base to explore the renowned Mnemba Atoll with scuba diving and snorkeling excursions. The atoll is a marine reserve known for its coral gardens and the spectacular plethora of pelagic and reef life it supports. Established in 1989 by Swedish siblings, Helen and Katrina, Matemwe Lodge has received makeovers through the years when it started out under the banner of Matemwe Bungalows, and is, today, a mid-range accommodation for discerning AfricanMecca guests vacationing in northeastern Zanzibar.
Built atop and along coral rocks with thatched roofs sitting on white walls, the 12 chalets of the lodge reflect the discrete romance of the powdery white sands of the beach set against a backdrop of lush green tropical vegetation and azure waters of the warm Indian Ocean. Spend your days on your exclusive patio curled on a sofa or in a hammock watching the yesteryear dhows with their quaint sails carrying fishermen out to sea. Or head out to the infinity pool or the free form pool for a leisurely siesta.
Created out of eco-friendly materials and set amidst well-landscaped gardens, the chalets with their Swahili decor have a rustically boutique appeal about them. 6 of the chalets are furnished with double beds while the other 6 have twin beds or triple beds located over two floors. Two of the double rooms also have a private plunge pool.
The beds are covered with mosquito netting for your protection while woven mats add to the warm, cozy feel of the rooms. Ensuite bathrooms include a shower, twin vanities, hair dryer and standalone bathtub. The rooms also carry tea and coffee making supplies and safety deposit box. Rooms are not air-conditioned, but there is an overhead fan and amply of sea breeze.
Have your meals on your Tanzanian culinary indulgent trip in the al fresco restaurant with breathtaking views of the ocean. You will be served lunch buffet-style while dinner is table d'hote with a selection of tasty seafood, vegetarian, meat and poultry dishes. But as you will find on your exploratory travels with AfricanMecca, Zanzibar has a lot more to offer its touring visitants.
The island has long been an important harbor of the spice trade, and when you visit its farms, you will enjoy viewing and tasting the spices in their unprocessed, organic form. The plantations also grow an incredible variety of succulent fruit, some that are available only in Zanzibar.
You could also go on a primate discovery excursion of the Jozani Forest, known for the red colobus monkeys that inhabit it. Visit the capital of Zanzibar, Stone Town for a cultural and historical experience, viewing the grand from the past buildings. Deep sea fishing is another thrilling activity you can try while on your adventurous tour of Eastern Africa.

The Zanzibar Stone Town tour guide was superlative. He was outstanding and gave us undivided attention. We felt that was great value and to be escorted round the market place and slave stations was like walking in a living museum.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.

Ras Nungwi was a beautiful property, the pristine white beach not more than forty feet from our lovely room, the Indian Ocean sublime. Raza, it was the vacation of a lifetime, again, thanks so much.
