A pristine stretch of pure white sands on Pongwe Beach on the east coast of Zanzibar Island with the dazzling azure waters of the Indian Ocean lapping gently on it, which is the setting for your barefoot beach vacation in Africa. You can stay at the modest Pongwe Beach Hotel and spend time swimming in the expansive sea, delicately tanning or napping in the hammocks under the palm trees. Adore the rustic structural ambience of the accommodation with its thatched roofs and open common areas set amidst tropical gardens and separated by sandy pathways. Or you could laze beside the swimming pool in comfortable loungers. The hotel has a selection of 16 rooms in thatched chalet structures housing two or three rooms each. You can choose from rooms in three specifications and they all include a private patio, mosquito netting, ceiling fan and en-suite bathroom. But there is no fresh water in the bathrooms and you have to make do with salt water for showers. Bottled drinking water is available on purchase; though, one liter of drinking water is supplied each day at no extra cost. The Sea View Suites offer views of the Indian Ocean amidst the vegetation and sun beds on the patio. It also comes with a plunge pool and the seashore is a stone-throw away. The Beach Front Rooms are located closer to the seaside and can accommodate up to four AfricanMecca guests while the Garden View Rooms set at the back amidst the coastal flora are suitable for groups of two or three guests beach holidaying in Zanzibar. Enjoy wholesome seafood and other meals in the open-air dining area with the thatched roofs creating a breezy shade spot. Pongwe Beach Hotel also has a collection of thatch umbrellas on the beach for al fresco meals. During your leisure days, you can set out early touring the varied attractions of Zanzibar, from terrestrial to aquatic. You will pleasantly relish the shimmering waters of the Indian Ocean that houses a mesmerizing world of coral reefs and a plethora of stunning marine creatures in many forms and colors. Go scuba diving and snorkeling at surrounding reefs or even at Mnemba Atoll, a reserve off sited in the northeast. In the center of Zanzibar Island is the Jozani Forest, a habitat haven for the red colobus monkey. Learn more about this endemic primate during your excursion. Your exploratory trip in Zanzibar with AfricanMecca will be made all the more enlightening with a tour of Stone Town, the island’s capital. Wander through its slender alleyways of this UNESCO World Heritage Site and be awed at the yesteryear historic structures amidst the vibrant Swahili cultural metropolis. You must also add a visit to the renowned spice plantations to your list of must-dos when traveling around Zanzibar (read more on the best time to visit). View the diverse spices growing on the trees and even as you taste them, you will understand why the island was a much-desired possession for many ancient rulers. And there is yet another treat waiting for you. Both amateurs and veteran anglers can visit the designated deep sea sites around Zanzibar and try catching a variety of billfish including swordfish, sailfish, marlins and others.

The Zanzibar Stone Town tour guide was superlative. He was outstanding and gave us undivided attention. We felt that was great value and to be escorted round the market place and slave stations was like walking in a living museum.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.
