WHERE TO STAY IN SHIMBA HILLS RESERVE
Our primary recommendation for your tranquil wilderness vacation is Kutazama Lodge, a deluxe accommodation that is located in the greater conservation area of Shimba Hills. This charming family hosted lodge is nestled within 31 acres of indigenous gardens. The show-stopper, though, is the unique architectural design that is constructed around the natural rock formations and trees. The design is not only environmentally friendly, but also visually appealing. The main lodge features many cozy spaces for relaxing, sampling tasty meals and immersing yourself in the pristine beauty around you. With only two guest suites, this mid-range accommodation has the same exclusive ambience as premium accommodations.
The Frangipani Suite, named after the fragrant tree in the suite’s private garden, features rounded walls, four-poster bed, en-suite bathroom and private patio. You may also choose the Orchid Treehouse Villa, a two-story structure that is hidden within the vegetation. The first level features a bedroom, en-suite bathroom and deck with Jacuzzi while the kitchen, lounge and sunbathing deck are located on the second level. The private deck overlooks the elephant sanctuary and the Manolo River, so you can watch these majestic animals traversing while you enjoy morning tea and coffee.
At Tier 3, Shimba Hills Lodge is situated in a gorgeous forest within the reserve. As a value accommodation by AfricanMecca standard, the lodge has sixty-seven rooms, so there may be more guests than what you would expect when compared with a Tier 2 lodging. Furnished with twin beds, the modest Standard guest rooms are clean and comfortable, but you share a bathroom with other guests. The lodge also offers two one-bedroom suites that are furnished with king size beds. Other suite amenities include en-suite bathroom, tea and coffee maker, mini bar and private balcony. The advantage of Shimba Hills Lodge is the location within the reserve. The trees around the property are filled with small mammals and birds, and a watering hole near the property gives you up-close-and-personal wildlife viewing of elephants to varied antelopes. At night, you are treated to a front row seat to wildlife activity at the watering hole under crepuscular light (read more on the Shimba Hills safari experience).
