GUIDE ON NORTHERN FRONTIER IN KENYA
The Northern Frontier is a vast, pristine wilderness expanse in northern Kenya. The landscape, flora, fauna, archaeological sites and small villages contribute to an unsurpassed, authentic vacation in the wildest of Africa. The terrain varies from red deserts along the northern border to lush highlands in the south. Although the terrain can be inhospitable, you will not find a more strikingly beautiful setting of contrasting geological features.
The experience reflects a dream, as you watch camels, cattle and indigenous herders follow ancient paths. In some locations, such as the sand dunes of Suguta Valley, fewer tourists have stood within the landscape than have been astronauts to space while other unbounded precincts have no human presence at all! Villages of the Turkana, Pokot, Rendille, El Molo and Samburu are scattered across the desert, lake and river terrain.
The Northern Frontier is the epitome of remote bush in Kenya. The terrain and climatic conditions are not conducive to the high number of travelers and activities as in other areas in Kenya, leaving this vast wilderness only to the fittest and adventurous of AfricanMecca guests.
The main interest areas in the Northern Frontier District are Sibiloi National Park’s main attractions i.e. Lake Turkana including Central Island (the largest desert lake) and Koobi Fora, and further south are the Matthews Mountain Range amidst Namunyak Conservancy where you can explore its rugged ecology present with wildlife, shadowed by an expedition to Mount Nyiru where Desert Rose Lodge is sited.
While in some of these areas, your guide takes you to prime archaeological sites to delve into the deep past of human history and follow in the footsteps of some of the world’s most prestigious archaeologists and paleoanthropologists like the Leakey Family.
For AfricanMecca’s most extreme thrill-seekers, we can also arrange aerial and land activities in the Chalbi Desert and Suguta Valley. Wildlife experiences are somewhat limited in the Northern Frontier, especially when compared to protected areas south or close to the equator in Kenya. Cultural, scenic and archeological attractions are the main reasons of visit.
Your best chances of viewing safari wildlife are at Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, and species include grevy’s and burchell zebras, elephants, hartebeests, reticulated giraffes, impalas, gazelles, to name some of the herbivores, as well as hyenas, African wild dogs, cheetahs, leopards, lions and other ferocious hunters.
