KOOBI FORA TOUR EXPERIENCES IN THE NORTHERN FRONTIER WITH AFRICANMECCA

North of Lake Turkana’s Allia Bay is Koobi Fora, an area that is known for the preservation of some of the world’s most important archaeological and paleoanthropological evidence of the earliest forms of man, animals and plant life, as well as ancient artifacts. Since 1969, the 1812 square kilometers area (700-square miles) has been under investigation by the finest international archaeologists and researchers, including the Leakeys.

Significant discoveries include relics dating back 3,000,000 years, including Paranthropus boisei and Turkana Boy, to name only two. Other notable finds include dozens of hominoid fossils, including Australopithecus Sensu Lato discovered by Dr. Richard Leakey, Homo Habilis discovered by Bernard Ngeves and one of the most widely renowned finds of all human fossils -- Homo Erectus, the Turkana Boy (aka Nariokotome Boy), discovered by Kamoya Kimeu, a research excavator to Dr. Leakey.

The work of these scientists not only documents human history, but also reveals valuable information about climatic changes in the region. What is now a practically unbearable desert dotted with petrified forests was once thriving with lush grasslands. AfricanMecca Safaris recommends that you spend some time at Koobi Fora to study the unique geological features, and perhaps stumble upon fossilized remains that remain hidden in the earth.

Although the petrified forests and volcanic landscape may seem uninhabitable, you will be thrilled when you find unexpected ecosystems that support diverse fauna and flora life. Some of the most noticeable and ferocious inhabitants are Nile crocodiles that dwell on the banks and islands of Lake Turkana and hippos too.
