GUIDE ON DESERT ROSE IN KENYA
An intriguing East African outback safari filled with remote romance and mystery awaits you at Desert Rose in Kenya’s Northern Frontier, a mid-range accommodation for the highly adventurous traveler. Situated in the cedar forests on Mount Oldonyo Nyiru above the Elbarta plains and in between the mountains of Karisia and Lake Turkana, Desert Rose immerses you in a remarkable wild landscape that is home to the Samburu people. With only 5 cottages to accommodate a maximum of 12 guests, you are sure to savor in the exclusivity of one of Kenya’s most remote and wild places. With two cottages with double beds, two cottages with twin beds and a family-size guest house, the range of room offerings is sure to meet the needs of solo travelers, couples, families and small groups. To ensure that you have a comfortable holiday in the Northern Frontier, your guest cottage features hand-crafted furnishings and construction made from native stone and wood materials that are harvested using eco-friendly practices. Each day you prepare for your incredible tour of northern Kenya’s best-kept secret in the comforts of a full en-suite bathroom with flush toilet and outdoor shower. To dismiss such luxury comforts would be unfathomable unappreciative as the closest grocery store is a two hours flight out. Breathtaking views are only a few steps outside your door, and a private patio gives you front row seats to enjoy the bush with a cup of coffee or tea in the morning or a refreshing cocktail at night. Desert Rose is designed to leave little footprint on nature, so the water is gravity fed and solar energy is used to heat water and provide electricity. At Desert Rose, AfricanMecca guests are almost entirely disconnected from the outside world as satellite telephone is the only reliable way to communicate outside the camp. Awaken to the sounds, smells and sights of a truly unique bush vacation in Kenya before meeting with your Samburu guide for a morning walking tour of the Northern Frontier and then return to the accommodation for a delicious breakfast. Before lunch, we recommend that you spend some time being enlightened by members of the Samburu community, and we can even arrange for your witnessing of a traditional ceremony on Mount Nyiru, a holy mountain of these inspiring people. Join other guests in the shade of acacia trees for lunch, and then take a short stroll around the property with a guide or return to your cottage for a much-needed nap. A bit of tea in the afternoon prepares you for another walk with camels if you prefer or aerial safari as an add-on option. Your guide takes you to the best vantage point for cocktails while the setting sun paints the sky in glorious colors, and then you are escorted back to the main dining area for a lovely candlelit dinner. Should you prefer a more adventurous trip to the Northern Frontier, AfricanMecca recommends a multi-day camel walk that includes fly camping under the stars. From Desert Rose, you can also extend to travel out to Sibiloi National Park - Lake Turkana (UNESCO World Heritage Site) for a couple of days to view archeological discoveries at Koobi Fora (read more on when is the best time to visit Northern Frontier).
