GUIDE ON TREETOPS LODGE IN KENYA
A historical viewing safari in Aberdare National Park awaits you at Treetops, a 36-room value accommodation that is known for one of its most famous visitors -- Queen Elizabeth. The night Princess Elizabeth spent at Treetops is also the day she rose to the throne as Queen as her father King George VI had passed away in Norfolk during her honeymoon in Kenya. Today, expect a non-frill accommodation and service experience rather than a royal one at Treetops. Almost 300 square miles of forest and highlands are at your doorstep, and the wildlife includes elephants, buffalos, rhinos, and many other foragers and grazers. Leopards, serval cats, spotted hyenas and other sneaky felines are always watching for prey animals, and the park is also home to the rare Bongo, a reddish-brown antelope that you may sight in the bamboo forest. The spectacular waterfalls at Aberdare Park attract nature-loving vacationers in East Africa who want to see the incredible spectacle of the 894-foot Karuru Falls, as well as the park's other falls. Treetops Lodge offers up-close-and-personal wildlife viewing as you lounge on the hotel’s observation decks that overlook a watering hole. The lodge does not offer activities for children, but your little ones will have a front-seat holiday in Kenya with AfricanMecca just watching the wildlife come and go from the deck and terrace areas. The proximity of the fauna will amaze you, and the experience may keep you up late into the night. If you do retire to bed, the nighttime watchman may awaken you with a buzzer when the nocturnal animals come to drink; thought, distinct activity is not present every single night.
More importantly, the accommodation is not a tree-lodge or a tree-house. It is built on stilts based on a three story structure. Treetops offers standard rooms including a handicap accessible room for guests with limited mobility, and the three large suites have separate sitting areas that overlook the watering hole. The warm jewel tones of the guest rooms are inviting and homely, and the modest rooms are clean. Standard rooms have twin beds that can be converted into a double bed and en-suite bathroom with shower. The rooftop terrace is an admirable place to view the watering hole, although we recommend that you wear warm clothes in the evenings as it does get chilly. You may also want to choose a room that is near the observation decks, so that night viewing is only a few steps away. An adequate buffet breakfast awaits you the next morning in the dining area, and you can spend the rest of the day viewing the animals at the lodge or partake of an optional game driving trip to the moorlands and salient wilderness. An add-on morning walking nature tour experience of the Aberdare forest and highlands lets you see black and white Colobus monkeys, baboons, Syke's monkeys and other smaller and discreet fauna that may not come to the watering hole. A must-do activity for your wilderness travel in Kenya is a late afternoon sundowner game drive. From your safari vehicle, you may locate waterbucks, reedbucks, impalas, bush bucks and other bush-lands animals, as well as some of the 250 feathered residents of the park. As the sun sets, your AfricanMecca guide takes you to the perfect location to watch the transformation of the African sky.
