GUIDE ON SAROVA LION HILL GAME LODGE IN KENYA
The reasonably-priced Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge offers budget-conscious travelers in Kenya, picturesque views of Lake Nakuru in Central Kenya. The lake is a favorite location amongst photographers, documentary filmmakers and wildlife seeking guests because it is the location of one of Africa’s most iconic avi-fauna natural events – the presence of throngs of lesser and greater flamingos. One to two million of these brilliantly-colored pink birds visit the lake to feed on the abundance of algae and to nest. When you visit the lake, watch for the moment when the massive number of these birds takes flight, transforming the lake into a blur of pastel colors. The Lion Hill Game Lodge has 64 standard rooms and 3 suites with private veranda located within individual chalets that are dispersed around the property. You feel right at home in the quiet privacy of your chalet room. The deep, warm color palette, wood accents, open beam ceilings, simple furnishings, white linens and natural light give you an overall sense of calm and relaxation. The en-suite bathroom features all of the necessary conveniences, including flush toilet, shower, 220/240-volt outlet, hair dryer and running hot and cold water. In between your AfricanMecca game viewing activities, you can update your travel journal at the small writing desk or relax on your private veranda with a freshly brewed warm beverage from your tea/coffee maker. For the best views of the lake, we recommend a room that is stated higher up Lion Hill, but guests with limited mobility may prefer rooms that are closer to the common areas. We also recommend the Ziwa Suite should you be planning a modest romantic holiday at Lake Nakuru, and families should opt for one of the two-bedroom suites if you prefer to have your children sleep in the same chamber. Your morning game drive offers an extended tour of Lake Nakuru Park along well-defined dirt roads to vantage points where you will see the most exciting and interesting animals, behaviors and events. Lions spend most of their time lounging and sleeping during the day, but you may be lucky enough to see a hunt during the cooler parts of the day. Watch as the pride’s lionesses in Nakuru stalk and capture a zebra or a buffalo, or a leopard ambushing an impala. The lake is part of Lake Nakuru National Park that encompasses part of the savannahs, woodlands and rocky outcrops of the Great Rift Valley. African safari enthusiasts are drawn to the lake for both the bird watching and wildlife viewing. Of the 450 bird species in the park, the most commonly seen are avocets, little grebes, stilts, white-winged black terns and ducks, as well as European migratory species. The tilapia and other fish in the lake are food for cormorants, fish eagles, goliath herons and other species that enjoy finned food sources. The white and black rhinos and Rothschild’s giraffes that you see during your game drives have been relocated to the park for protective reasons. The abundance of hippos, waterbucks, Colobus monkeys and other prey animals attracts lions, leopards, striped hyenas and other prey hunters. After your morning game drive, you may arrange a private champagne breakfast in the bush or return to the lodge in time for a palatable buffet breakfast or you may opt to have breakfast before your early morning game drive. Once your appetite is satisfied, take a leisurely guided nature walking around lodge’s vicinity or watch the activity at the lake from the patio of your chalet. After an adequate lunch, spend time lounging at the pool or journaling about your memorable, dream vacation in Kenya with AfricanMecca before venturing out for an afternoon game drive. We recommend staying for two nights at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge if you would like to combine it with a trip to Lake Naivasha for boating and walking on Crescent Island. Join other guests at sunset for cocktails and traditional dance performances before having dinner under the starlit sky.
