GUIDE ON OLERAI HOUSE IN KENYA
Olerai House is a mid-range, choice accommodation located on the western shore of Lake Naivasha. You find yourself surrounded by 400 acres of pristine central Kenyan bush that is designated as a wildlife sanctuary. Giraffes, monkeys, zebras, impalas, buffalos, gazelles and many other herbivores roam freely, giving you a small sample of an authentic East African rift valley safari. Choose from five individually themed guest rooms that reflect the heritage of Olerai House, as well as some of the owner’s favorite African animals. Bed frames constructed of vines, glass inlays, colorful wall décor, freshly cut flowers and local artwork are just some of the elements that make Olerai House a unique accommodation. The owners of the lodge welcome your children and pets so your entire family can enjoy a relaxing and enjoyable lake holiday in Kenya. The Twiga and Nodvu rooms are situated in a separate, private house, and both rooms offer unsurpassed views of hippos grazing in the evenings. Twiga is the Swahili word for “giraffe,” and this room is designed to celebrate the elegant beauty of this animal. The room feels light and airy and features a centered bed with netting, vaulted ceiling, ample windows and shower made of blue glass. Outside your room, resident giraffes nibble on the foliage that line the roof. Ndovu, Swahili for “elephant,” was once used as a writing room for the Douglas-Hamilton family, and the room still maintains the ambience of an author’s library, such as wood paneling, large double bed, curved sofa inset by its bay window and much more. Families traveling with AfricanMecca will be quite comfortable during their wondrous holiday vacation in Kenya when they opt for the large, two-bedroom crisp blue and white color palette Saba room that features a private veranda and a separate parent - child bathroom. Curious Colobus monkeys peer into the windows of the Dudu room on the upper level, and the wood boarded cottage across from the main house has lovely views of the gardens. Cool, crisp air invigorates your senses, and freshly brewed tea or coffee awakens you to the glorious landscape that awaits you. Start your day with a morning boat tour of Lake Naivasha, home to more than 450 avian species. Have your camera ready as African fish eagles dive for a meal, black herons use their wings to cover their heads while feeding and pink-backed pelicans, saddle-billed storks and other fish eaters search for fish. The abundance of avi-fauna extends into the scrub brush, forests and highlands around the lake, and your guide expertly identifies each bird by sound, appearance, nest structure and behavior. Your growing hunger is satisfied with a garden breakfast of freshly baked scones, pancakes, fruit and much more. A late morning nature walk on the banks of the lake with an experienced ornithologist adds to your morning birdwatching trip to Lake Naivasha, or you may choose to lounge in the gardens or spend time relaxing some other way. After a delicious lunch, you have some free time before afternoon tea in the garden where you enjoy splendid views of Mount Longonot amidst the resident wildlife (read more on when is the best time to visit Lake Naivasha for a tour). For your afternoon activity, choose a boat trip to Crescent Island for a nature walk, horseback riding, community visits and much more. AfricanMecca can also arrange day trips and treks to the Mount Longonot crater, Hell’s Gate National Park, Lake Elementaita, game drive in Lake Nakuru with a picnic lunch and much more. Sundowners are served at the end of your twilight activity before a delectable three-course dinner at Olerai House.
