GUIDE ON CRATER LAKE CAMP IN KENYA
Crater Lake Camp is a picturesque green lake located at the bottom of an extinct volcano. The lush greenery around it abounding with more than 450 different species of birds and many mammals is a haven of tranquility and a veritable paradise for non-frill guests traveling in central Kenya with AfricanMecca. The Crater Lake Camp Camp is a value accommodation sited on the shores of the lake. It has a pastoral simplicity to it with wooden posts and thatch having been used to construct most of it. The reception, dining area and tented rooms all face the lake allowing views of the water birds like flamingos, egrets, storks, herons, kingfishers, cormorants and many more. The camp offers 13 modest tented rooms to adventurers touring Lake Naivasha. Each of the tents is erected on a platform and has a thatch roof for shelter. While few have twin beds, most have a double bed and the camp provides you with hot water bottles as the nights tend to get cooler in the Great Rift Valley. The patio has light furniture and is ideal for spending time relaxing and looking out over the lake. The attached bathroom has a distinct shower area with basic amenities and hot water is available for your use. Parents with young children can opt to book the family banda and the camp has a special suite for budget honeymooners. The camp has a selection of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes for your meal and they also serve snacks and beverages all through the day. Visit the camp restaurant to subtly enjoy the warm ambience as you have your meal. They also have an outdoor dining area and another on the lake for romantics with a long pier leading out to it. The bar serves varied drinks, and an evening bonfire is lit around which you can sip beverages and watch as dusk settles over the lake, a fitting end to an exciting day on your East African lake trip.
To learn more about the history of the place, you could visit the grave of Lady Diana Delamere, the main protagonist of “Happy Valley.” If you are in an adventurous mood on your vacation in Kenya, take a trip to the wheat fields of Ndabibi to see the “Caves of God.” It is believed that these caves inspired Rider Haggard to write about Allan Quatermain. The boat ride you take on the lake lets you view varied birdlife around this distinct alkaline lake. You might also see an odd buffalo or hippo grazing on the banks after drinking from the fresh waters of Naivasha lake. The lake does seasonally have lesser flamingos feeding on its algae. From Crater Lake Camp Camp, you can go for long nature walks and the guide accompanying you will explain the properties of the flora you see and show you how to spot the many gloriously colored birds around. Look out for the bee-eaters, red-billed fire finches, yellow-collared lovebirds, brimstone canaries, spectacled weavers and grey-capped warblers. Zebras, giraffes, antelopes like impalas, elands, gazelles, kongoni and klipspringers are also present around the lake grounds. From Crater Lake Camp, you can visit Hell’s Gate or Lake Nakuru National Park on a full day safari with AfricanMecca.
