GUIDE ON MUKUTAN RETREAT IN KENYA
Mukutan Retreat has a unique treat to offer their guests, that of living amidst untainted gorge hills on their Laikipia wildlife holiday in northern Kenya, and actually experiencing the lifestyle of a remote adventurer but with a rustic, contemporary touch. The lodge gives you the impression that it is carved into the edge of the precipice because of its rock walls along with its papyrus, thatched roofs and a combination of stone and hardwood floors. Modestly beautiful African paintings and ornaments are scattered everywhere along with wooden furniture. You will be fascinated by the ingenuity of their building styles that incorporate deluxe, homely amenities in a true rustic setting. Owned and run by Kuki Gallman, the lodge is located on the far western side of Laikipia wildlands on the Ol Ari Nyiro Conservancy. The Place of Springs or Ol Ari Nyiro was originally a cattle ranch that has been converted into a wildlife reserve. The Mukutan River carves a gorge of the same name and the lodge is perched on its lip, offering you stunning views of the sheer beauty of the magical environs making every moment of your AfricanMecca dream trip to Laikipia worthwhile. The lodge also has an infinity swimming pool that seems to empty into the gorge. Mukutan Retreat features a common living and dining room with comfortable furniture and a fireplace. They have 3 chalets for guests traveling in this area of East Africa with double or twin beds covered with mosquito netting. Each of the rooms has a fireplace where the staff lights a fire in the evenings and a patio overlooking the gorge. A wooden writing desk and carved chest are also placed in your room. The en-suite bathroom is capacious and includes a bathtub and double washbasins. One of the rooms has its bathtub placed on the rim of the crag for an al fresco bathing experience. Ol Ari Nyiro comprises of 100,000 acres of untouched forests, grasslands and hills bisected by the Mukutan Gorge, which has walls with heights that range from 3,000 feet to 7,000 feet. The complete ecosystem of natural hot and cold springs, waterfalls and 62 manned lakes supports a remarkable variety of olden plants and trees, native to only this part of Kenya. Some of these varieties have only just been discovered and these green refuges support an equally awesome diversity of rare insects. The Mukutan Conservancy has some 470 species of birds thriving here and is home to an amazing list of wildlife that includes baboons, antelopes, gazelles, zebras, giraffes, Cape buffaloes, elephants and many more. Among the large predators, lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas are present. Laikipia is one of the few locations where populations of black rhino are thriving and you will see a good numbers of them on your game drives, probably one of the highlights of your safari tour of Kenya. AfricanMecca Safaris can organize a range of activities so that you can explore the hidden secrets of Ol Ari Nyiro Conservancy. You can go on walking tours in the company of a naturalist guide to understand the flora or choose a horse or camel riding safari. You can spend time swimming in rock carved pool or fishing in the wilds of western Laikipia. Also, take this opportunity to include a trip to an archaeological site uncovered in the conservancy during your exploratory vacation in Africa.
