KHOLLE HOUSE IN STONE TOWN ZANZIBAR
Experience the life of a Zanzibar princess at Kholle House, a deluxe accommodation located in charming Stone Town (read more on where to stay) on one of Africa’s most enchanting islands. The house was built by the island’s first Sultan for his daughter in 1860. After three years of painstaking renovation, the house has been returned to its former glory, offering like-minded AfricanMecca guests a tranquil escape from their energetic activities. You are surrounded by historic buildings, mesmerizing cultures and ancient architecture whilst immersing yourself in a subtle and tasteful blend of French-Creole fused with Swahili design. You simply cannot imagine a more splendid way to spend your divine Swahili island holiday than sleeping and relaxing in one of the 10 charming rooms. Whether you are seeking solace after an intense safari in Tanzania’s wilderness or preparing for your bush adventure, the ambience is sure to soothe your soul. The best rooms are the Prestige Suites offering ample space delightfully decorated with golden-yellow stained bathtub, hand-crafted fixtures and a gorgeous Zanzibari bed. Your air-conditioned sleeping area features a queen-size bed, antique-like furnishings, and a sitting area, perfect for relaxing moments while the balcony affords the finest views of the surrounds. The hotel also offers Deluxe Suites, two of which have lovely views of the swimming pool, mosque and Old Town from private terraces. The Classic Rooms are the smallest, and one is available on the ground floor. Some guests may find these rooms constricted, but that is rewarded by lower room costs. Also, the house does not have an elevator, and stairs lead to rooms on the higher floors so be prepared to burn some of those extra vacation calories gained.
Kholle House has many areas for reading, relaxing and conversation, such as the swimming pool, garden, rooftop and lounge area, but a privately guided Stone Town tour is one of the finest ways to spend your time on the island. You spend two to three hours wandering the narrow alleyways, so we recommend that you partake of the delicious breakfast offerings before the walking excursion. With your appetite satisfied, join your AfricanMecca guide and set out on an exploratory journey of cultural and faith structures, various architectural treasures and insight into the island’s slave trade history. The pace is quite leisurely, so you have plenty of time to browse the local market and tiny stores. You see first-hand many of the town’s prized buildings, including House of Tippu Tip, Forodhani Gardens, Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), Peace Memorial Museum (Beit-al-Amani), Livingstone House, Sultan’s Palace Museum (Beit-al-Sahel), House of Wonders and Indian Dispensary that is now a cultural center. Return to Kholle for a quick siesta and snack on the rooftop Tea House before journeying to a local spice farm. Seeing the cultivation of some of the world’s finest spices, fruits and other gastronomical ingredients, such as lemongrass, nutmeg, tangerines, jackfruit, starfruit, to name only a few, is a highlight of your insightful travels in East Africa. Your guide then leads you into Jozani Forest Reserve for an ecological trip into Zanzibar’s first and only national park. The jungle is home to rare species, such as red colobus monkeys, Sykes monkeys and Aders’ duikers. Peer into the vegetation and you may see lizards, frogs, insects and other busy-bodies. Flitting about are colorful butterflies, and along the coast are turtles and other seaside inhabitants. As the day ends, return to Kholle House for cocktails on the rooftop terrace and watch the colors of the sunset scatter color across the Indian Ocean.

The Zanzibar Stone Town tour guide was superlative. He was outstanding and gave us undivided attention. We felt that was great value and to be escorted round the market place and slave stations was like walking in a living museum.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.
Denise Paterson - Belmont, Australia
Ras Nungwi was a beautiful property, the pristine white beach not more than forty feet from our lovely room, the Indian Ocean sublime. Raza, it was the vacation of a lifetime, again, thanks so much.
