BEYT AL SALAAM IN STONE TOWN ZANZIBAR
Located in the World Heritage Site, Stone Town in Zanzibar, the Beyt Al Salaam is an economy accommodation for like-minded AfricanMecca guests vacationing on the quaint side of the island. Originally a tea house by the name of Beyt Al Chai, the hotel retains all the traditional touches of the time of the Sultans. A garden with tamarind trees and hibiscus flowers add to the relaxed ambience while the sounds of the muezzin, the ringing of temple and church bells remind you of the inquisitive, diverse mix of Zanzibar and Tanzania’s rich cultural past in Eastern Africa. The Beyt Al Salaam is built in traditional Zanzibari style and is adorned with wall hangings, timeworn photographs, traditional lamps and filigree lanterns hanging from the ceiling. It has just 10 rooms located over three floors in three specifications. You could choose from their three Standard Rooms, four Deluxe Rooms or three Superior Rooms. Each of the rooms is furnished with old-style Zanzibari furniture ensuring an authentic Swahili feel. Some of them have four-poster beds with diaphanous mosquito curtains while others have carved headboards. You will find old armoires and armchairs placed in the nooks and crannies along with an odd writing desk with its tiny drawers. Here and there, little niches hold traditional artifacts but, you will also find the basic comforts for your holiday typical of a value accommodation like air-conditioning, electric kettle, ceiling fan, satellite TV, in-room safe, hairdryer and in-room telephone. Organza covered windows let in the Indian Ocean breezes that along with the thick limestone walls serve to keep the interiors cool.
Meals at the Beyt Al Salaam are served in their restaurant on the ground floor. Enjoy their fusion cuisine accompanied by wines. Experience the wonders of this island city by wandering through its narrow lanes lined with tiny traditional shops offering you fabrics, trinkets and carved artifacts. Haggle a little with the wizened Zanzibarian storekeeper and walk away with a lovely memento of your Swahili coastal trip. Spend time on your Stone Town tour marveling at the many architectural, historical and cultural wonders of Zanzibar, each of which belongs to a different era and tell moving tales. There is the Sultan's Palace, the House of Wonders also called Beit-al-Ajaib, Livingstone House, Anglican Church and so many more. In the Forodhani Gardens in the evening, you will also find fragrant spices and fresh seafood cooked to perfection. Indulge in some unusual fruits like durian or shoki-shoki and sink your teeth into their unique lusciousness. During your day, you could travel out to the fruit plantations and view them growing along with the spices. Watch how the zings are harvested and learn about their many medicinal properties. The Jozani Forest Reserve located in the floral heart of the island is home to the rare red colobus monkey. View them as your AfricanMecca guide talks to you about the food they eat and how they care for their young. He will also introduce you to some unique species of flora that are endemic to Zanzibar even as you take pictures of the beautiful butterflies flitting among them.

The Zanzibar Stone Town tour guide was superlative. He was outstanding and gave us undivided attention. We felt that was great value and to be escorted round the market place and slave stations was like walking in a living museum.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.
Denise Paterson - Belmont, Australia
Ras Nungwi was a beautiful property, the pristine white beach not more than forty feet from our lovely room, the Indian Ocean sublime. Raza, it was the vacation of a lifetime, again, thanks so much.
