AL JOHARI IN STONE TOWN ZANZIBAR
The 15-room, budget-friendly Al Johari Hotel is indeed a modest little gem in the Shangani Stone Town area of Zanzibar. Tucked within narrow alleys, the hotel gives guests a non-frill experience of its old town. The two adjoining buildings that are used for the accommodation feature architectural details that are representative of this town’s history. The diminutive corridors and stairways inside the hotel have also been preserved. Some guests may find the layout charming while others may feel a bit cramped when moving about the hotel. The ambience is enhanced with some contemporary touches that are well-matched with traditional design elements, giving our guests a union feel for ancient Stone Town while having the necessary amenities. For your cultural island holiday in this part of Eastern Africa, Al Johari offers 2 Deluxe Suites, 3 Superior Rooms, 4 Standard Suites and 6 Junior Suites. The traditional décor of the rooms includes ornate carved dark wood beds and furniture resting on local rugs and marble floors. For your convenience, all rooms also have individual air-conditioner climate controls, en-suite bathroom with shower, flat screen LCD television with access to cable channels, hairdryer and mosquito netting. The rooms feature a neutral color palette with splashes of jewel tones. For AfricanMecca guests who desire an immersive vacation stay, we recommend the rooms on the first and second level to have the best views of activity on the streets of Stone Town. The rooms are generally clean, but may need some minor maintenance. The hotel also offers dry cleaning and laundry services to guests.
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stone Town is an exceptionally preserved piece of ancient history that engages and delights our guests. The many winding streets starting from Al Johari Hotel and other buildings are all worth discovering. You may spend hours meandering, but for a more focused outing, AfricanMecca recommends a privately guided Stone Town Tour. You will need a bit of energy for the walking journey, so take some time in the morning to enjoy the Al Johari’s breakfast offerings. Water is also essential for the excursion. The accommodation only provides one bottle of water per guest per day, which is inadequate. We recommend purchasing additional bottles from street vendors, as buying bottled water from Al Johari is cost-prohibitive for many guests. Your guided walking outing of Zanzibar’s Stone Town takes you to distinct historic landmarks, such as the Anglican Church that was built in 1817 on the site of the old slave market. You also visit the town market - Darajani, Peace Memorial Museum (Beit-al-Aman), House of Wonders (Beit-al-Ajaib), Old Arab Fort, Forodhani Gardens and Sultan's Palace Museum (Beit-al-Sahel). The tour then takes you to the old Indian Dispensary that is now a wonderful cultural center. The last two stops are Tippu Tip House and Livingstone House. Return to your accommodation for an adequate lunch or at a roadside restaurant, and spend the remaining daylight on a Spice excursion. Zanzibar Island is known around the world for its spices, and our guided tour takes you to an operating spice farm to see the cultivation of herbs, raw seasonings, fruits and other plants. After your spice tour (time permitting) or the next day, we also recommend that you travel out Jozani for a Zanzibar-style forest walk safari. The forest is home to many smaller creatures, including threatened red colobus monkeys. As the evening sets in on your Indian Ocean trip in this distinct island, part of Tanzania, return to Al Johari and find a cozy spot at the hotel’s rooftop lounge. Order your favorite cocktail and watch the dhows sail by on the spectacular Indian Ocean. The water shimmers with golden hues of the setting sun, a perfect prelude to a delicious dinner of local seafood, meat, poultry and vegetables all prepared with heavenly local spices.

The Zanzibar Stone Town tour guide was superlative. He was outstanding and gave us undivided attention. We felt that was great value and to be escorted round the market place and slave stations was like walking in a living museum.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.
Denise Paterson - Belmont, Australia
Ras Nungwi was a beautiful property, the pristine white beach not more than forty feet from our lovely room, the Indian Ocean sublime. Raza, it was the vacation of a lifetime, again, thanks so much.
