ZANZIBAR RETREAT HOTEL
A pleasing drive through the quaint fishing village of Matemwe and you come upon a small resort by the beachfront. A quiet central atrium with tropical foliage and the incredible vistas of the turquoise of the Indian Ocean casting a striking contrast against the powder soft sands of Matemwe Beach; this is the Zanzibar Retreat Hotel. An economy accommodation in the northeastern section of the island (read more on where else to stay), it is sited on a picturesque seaside, a perfect location to wake up to the spectacular sunrises over the sea on your barefoot vacation with AfricanMecca. The hotel has just 12 rooms housed in one and two story structures covered with thatch roofs. Swahili-styled archways adorn the patio running around the swimming pool while comfortable loungers invite you for a relaxed sunbathing session in between dips in the pool. The hotel has eight Regular Rooms on the lower floor with light-weight patio furniture. The Executive Sea View Rooms on the upper floors have sea-facing balconies and come equipped with a coffee maker and mini-fridge. Holidayers can also opt for the two Garden View Rooms that are sited in a quiet corner of this simple hotel. All of the air-conditioned rooms are furnished with traditional Zanzibari furniture, comfortable four-poster beds covered with mosquito netting for your protection. Some of the rooms have king-sized beds while others have twins. The rooms are spacious enough to accommodate one or two extra beds so a small family can sleep comfortably. Carved armoires and side tables also add to the unpretentious appeal of the rooms.
The Zanzibar Retreat Hotel serves you wholesome meals in their open restaurant and bar beside the seashore, cooled by a thatched roof and gentle ocean breezes. You can choose from their menu that includes inter-continental-style and local Zanzibari preparations, must-tries on your travel on the island. Spend languorous afternoons of your trip taking siestas in day beds on the beach under the shade of palm leaf umbrellas, a typical activity of the laid-back lifestyle on the Tanzanian seaside. You could also go scuba diving and snorkeling in the Mnemba Atoll coral gardens beneath the placid waters of the Indian Ocean and discover a peaceful realm ablaze with color. Also, go exploring the quaint charms of this ancient island. The narrow, winding alleyways of its capital, Stone Town, a World Heritage Site, are lined with delightful little stores that remind you of the time of Omani princes and princesses. You must also view the architectural relics that each has a story to tell of their construction. The Tippu Tip House, Beit Al Ajaib, Beit Al Sahel and the Anglican Cathedral are only some of them. Your AfricanMecca guide will take you on a tour of the Jozani Forest Reserve, another wonder of Zanzibar where you can watch a rare primate, the red colobus monkey in its natural surroundings. This forest is also host to many unique flora, insect-life, amphibians, small reptiles and many more. Also, visit the spice plantations of Zanzibar and listen in awe as you learn about their almost miraculous curative properties aside from its culinary seasoning benefits. You could also go fishing in the chosen sites off the Zanzibar shore, another adventure activity on your East African escapade.

The Zanzibar Stone Town tour guide was superlative. He was outstanding and gave us undivided attention. We felt that was great value and to be escorted round the market place and slave stations was like walking in a living museum.

I booked my safari holiday through AfricanMecca. They were the most helpful company I have ever dealt with and I work within the travel industry. I had the most amazing time. The holiday went as clockwork with no hitches anywhere.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.
Denise Paterson - Belmont, Australia
Ras Nungwi was a beautiful property, the pristine white beach not more than forty feet from our lovely room, the Indian Ocean sublime. Raza, it was the vacation of a lifetime, again, thanks so much.
