MATEMWE BANDAS IN ZANZIBAR
Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Matemwe Bandas
To truly experience the charm of authentic island living on your barefoot vacation in Eastern Africa, you must stay at the Matemwe Bandas located on the northeast of Zanzibar (read more on where to stay). Palm frond weaved walls and mats on raised floors, makuti thatched roofs and soft sands sinking underfoot, this is the ambience of the simplistic structures of this hotel. The stunning azure of the Indian Ocean spreads out in front of you almost blending with the gorgeous blue of the clear sky on the horizon. AfricanMecca lodgers can swim lazy laps in the swimming pool or simply bask beside it in comfortable daybeds under parasols and hammocks strung between the tropical palms. Matemwe Bandas has just 5 bandas for eco-travelers looking for a no-frills accommodation. Three of the bandas are on the beach while the other two are located in a two-floor banda beside the pool. The beds are very basic but covered with mosquito nets for your protection. The furniture is crafted out of coconut wood, and perhaps, a picture of Indian Gods and Goddesses on the wall could remind you of the Asian traces in Zanzibar's history. Attached bathrooms come with double basins and toiletries for your use. The cool ocean breezes, fans and natural building materials keep the bandas cool while the verandah and seating arrangements are quiet spots to take in the sheer beauty of your surroundings. Mineral drinking water is placed in your room, and solar panels provide power for lights.
You can also use the Wi-Fi services provided. You will be enjoying wholesome meals in the restaurant with sand tickling your toes. Or, request for room service or a romantic candlelit dinner by the beachfront with the stars of East Africa shining down on you. The tropical waters of the Indian Ocean in front of Matemwe Bandas hide a magical world of coral gardens and their colorful denizens that you can explore by going diving and snorkeling at Mnemba Marine Reserve. Back on the shore, you can tour a terrestrial wonderland, the Jozani Forest Reserve. This biome houses the rare red colobus monkey and a collection of other unusual flora, insects, amphibians and reptiles. The spice plantations are yet another fascinating locale you must visit on your island holiday. As you learn about the distinct medicinal elixirs that can be created out of the spices, you will understand why the ancients valued them so much and why the island was such a coveted location. Also, view the fruits that grow here such as custard apples, durians, bungos, shoki-shoki, bananas, papaya and many more. The capital of Zanzibar, Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a fascinating abode that you must visit on your trip to this unique Tanzanian island. Its narrow alleyways are lined with old coral limestone buildings covered with lichen and tiny stores selling you traditional wares. Your well-informed AfricanMecca guide will also accompany you to see the magnificent specimens of ancient buildings like the Anglican Church, Beit Al Sahel, Beit Al Ajaib or the House of Wonders, Tippu Tip House and many more. If you would like to spend an active afternoon of excitement and oceanic relaxation, you could go on a fishing excursion at one of the deep-sea sites off the coast of Zanzibar.

The Zanzibar Stone Town tour guide was superlative. He was outstanding and gave us undivided attention. We felt that was great value and to be escorted round the market place and slave stations was like walking in a living museum.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.

Ras Nungwi was a beautiful property, the pristine white beach not more than forty feet from our lovely room, the Indian Ocean sublime. Raza, it was the vacation of a lifetime, again, thanks so much.
