PONGWE BAY RESORT IN ZANZIBAR
Allow the immense beauty of Pongwe Beach in eastern Zanzibar to cast a spell around you with its powdery soft white sands, the glistening waters of the Indian Ocean and lush neatly arranged gardens with banana, and croton trees, bougainvillea and frangipani. This is the idyllic Tanzanian vacation setting for the Pongwe Bay Resort, a pleasant value accommodation for AfricanMecca seaside lodgers. Follow the paved walkways to the rooms, lounge, free-form swimming pool and beachfront. Makuti thatched roofs cover the structures arranged around the pool giving the accommodation a welcoming feel. Relax in the loungers beside the pool with a book chosen from the library or spend time taking straightforward massages at the hotel’s Maji Spa. The Pongwe Bay Resort offers 20 rooms located in one and two story chalets. The rooms on the lower floor on the two-story have patios while the rooms on the upper floors come with verandahs. Featuring elements of Swahili and subtle contemporary decor, the rooms with their white walls, colorful tapestry and area rugs afford a comfortable feel. Mosquito nets suspended from the ceiling cover the bed alongside a small seating arrangement. Other amenities include a safety box for valuables, ceiling fan, dresser, luggage rack and writing desk. Some of the attached bathrooms have a single basin while others come with twin vanities. Enjoy tasty, wholesome meals in the resort’s Bahari Lounge Restaurant cooled with gentle breezes from the ocean. The bar is next to the lounge that serves a selection of drinks including cocktails. When not taking long siestas on Pongwe Beach under thatched parasols in complete tranquility, you could enjoy the serenity of the ocean aboard one of the fishing boats. As you cruise on the waters, the expert skipper on board will show you how to set up your equipment and try catching the game fish Zanzibar is so famous for. Look for marlin, yellow-fin tuna, wahoo, sailfish and swordfish, to name a few. Also, go touring the cultural delights of the ancient alleyways of Stone Town in the heart of the island. Here, you can view the many architectural relics that each talk of a different era of the island's colorful past. Trip out to the Anglican Church, Beit al Sahel, Forodhani Gardens, Tippu Tip House and many more. You could also go shopping in the quaint little stores with their lovely wares. In the midst of this beautiful island is the Jozani Forest Reserve, set aside for the conservation of the Kirk's red colobus monkey. As you watch these fascinating creatures, your AfricanMecca guide will talk to your about their behaviors, from grooming, foraging to mating. You can also view the varieties of flora, insects, reptiles and amphibians. Later, you could travel out to the spice and fruit estates where you will find a rich array of zests growing in the natural form. Look for cinnamon, cardamom, clove, anise and ginger, among others. You can also view the many fruits endemic to the island. Your East African oceanic holiday would be incomplete without a scuba diving and snorkeling excursion in the reef gardens off the coast of the island. Delight in the many shapes and colors of the coral that shelter an equally stunning range of aquatic creatures like wrasses, turtles, dolphins, distinct reef fishes, sea urchins, lobsters and crabs to name a scarce few.

The Zanzibar Stone Town tour guide was superlative. He was outstanding and gave us undivided attention. We felt that was great value and to be escorted round the market place and slave stations was like walking in a living museum.

I booked my safari holiday through AfricanMecca. They were the most helpful company I have ever dealt with and I work within the travel industry. I had the most amazing time. The holiday went as clockwork with no hitches anywhere.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.
Denise Paterson - Belmont, Australia
Ras Nungwi was a beautiful property, the pristine white beach not more than forty feet from our lovely room, the Indian Ocean sublime. Raza, it was the vacation of a lifetime, again, thanks so much.
