GUIDE ON MANYARA RANCH TENTED CAMP IN TANZANIA
Tanzania has a remarkable record for wildlife protection including in Manyara, having recognized a major national asset and turned over a quarter of its total country land area to national parks and other conservation initiatives. Human population pressures are increasingly trapping wildlife within reserves surrounded by farms, villages and roads, but to sustain the conservation effort, local people and animals must be considered together, not shutting human inhabitants out and animals in, but motivating the local communities to preserve their natural heritage by showing how they can co-exist for mutual benefit. For this reason, the African Wildlife Foundation has chosen the 35,000 acres of Manyara Ranch Conservancy as a flagship project for tours in Tanzania. Manyara Ranch, founded in Colonial times, is now a small working cattle farm within the Kwakuchinja Wildlife Corridor between Ngorongoro, Lake Natron and Lake Manyara. To maintain viability, a wilderness camp has been set up to attract tourists on safari trips in Africa and to fund conservation measures such as the building of dams and community educational projects. It is owned by the Tanzanian Land Conservation Trust on behalf of local communities and has an excellent working relationship with the Maasai people. Every AfricanMecca guest to the Manyara Ranch Tented Camp contributes to preserving the game corridor through which hundreds of thousands of mammals, particularly gnus, elephants, zebra and their assorted predators that wander annually. So successful has this been, that this deluxe safari camp is now widely recognized for its innovative range of activities and the quality of accommodation and services it provides as a base for tours in Manyara.
Accommodation At Manyara Ranch Tented CampEight good-sized, immaculately clean and deluxe, insect proof canvas tents, each measuring approximately 30 square meters, afford safari-style comfort for adventurous visitors, with permanent hot and cold running water in an en-suite bathroom as part of a joint tarp extension behind the bed (where else to stay in Manyara). A flush toilet and shower complete the amenities. An airy and light writing area with desk and chair also has solar lighting for night time, with a safe storage chest, wardrobe and luggage rack. There is a convenient patio outside each tent to sit and watch local wildlife, which moves about freely within the camp. The patio is shaded by graceful acacia trees and commands excellent views of lightly wooded grassland where elephant and giraffes feed. Leopard, lion, and cheetah have been seen, as well as beautiful genet cats. This is a level of African wildlife presence unrivaled for vacations in Tanzania with AfricanMecca. You can even watch weaver birds constructing their intricate, pendulous nests from long, dry flowering grasses in the acacia trees. A well-appointed dining tent also serves as a social focus with a bar and a small library of reference books. The staff at Manyara Ranch Tented Camp cannot do enough to help, and are proud of their delightful camp and of their wildlife visitors. They are an invaluable resource quite apart from the trained guides, guards and conservation officers you will meet on your Manyara Ranch Tented Camp Safari.
Safari At Manyara Ranch Tented CampThere are more fascinating options for unusual African travel activities at Manyara Ranch Tented Camp than most Tanzanian safari accommodation. Skilled seasoned riders make take out horses on the smooth grasslands to mingle with ungulates, kudu, and impala, or race with banner-tailed warthogs through the golden grass. Keen cultural tourists may visit authentic Maasai bomas, villages and schools, and learn about their eco-friendly lifestyle. Guided walking safari from Manyara Ranch Tented Camp are a favorite way to reach well-sited hides on the banks of waterhole, frequented by hundreds of bird species, or on and the edge of woodlands where blue and vervet monkeys frolic in the lacy tree canopies. You can cycle, or go fly camping (4 nights minimum stay) to sleep with a single blanket under an African safari moon and starry skies. But the most rewarding activity of all must be the game drive in a specially appointed 4 x 4 viewing vehicle, which you can take off-road and leave as you wish to approach your quarry more closely on foot. But don’t make the mistake of getting between a portly hippopotamus and his home wallow, or you may discover how horrifically aggressive he or she can be. Fortunately, these creatures rarely emerge to graze except at night, when they must be treated with extreme respect. With reasonable care and a good guide, you will return from your Tanzanian safari with AfricanMecca with a store of wonderful memories, some amazing photographs, and a new awareness of what it means to live in the natural world.
Dining At Manyara Ranch Tented CampThe dining keynote of an African tour based at Manyara Ranch Tented Camp is the freedom and flexibility of bush dining to enable you to take full advantage of the nature of this 35,000 acre private conservation area where Tanzania National Park and Reserves regulations do not apply, and you may drive or walk where you wish, to get as close as possible to the inspiring sights and sounds of this unspoiled wilderness which ends with dining in the wild at hand-picked locations within the ranch. Packed lunches, sundowners and bush meals may therefore be taken at selected locations to enable you to get the most out of your Manyara trip with AfricanMecca. Morning walks, game drives and horse riding are all options you can take before breakfasting on fruit, cereals, cheese, toast, cooked eggs, or even a full English breakfast. This is a camp for active visitors who will work up a respectable appetite for the culinary skills of a first class bush chef and the delights of fresh food, locally sourced and prepared with an enthusiastic flair. A late afternoon game drive with your guide may take you to the thousands of wading birds on Lake Manyara, or troupes of hundreds of elephants, baboons, or herds of zebra and buffalo to be seen on the plains. Returning after sundown, you will see nocturnal animals, especially aardvark, aardwolf and bat-eared foxes, sensibly illuminated by your guide without frightening them unduly. Yearning around a campfire after dinner, under a million stars undimmed by any hint of light pollution, you may listen to the comforting hum, rumble, bark and twitter of a unique night on holiday in Tanzania at Manyara Ranch.

Loretta and I had a great time on our honeymoon. We both also really enjoyed our time in the Serengeti. We were able to witness the wildebeest migration and saw literally over 1 or 2 million animals trekking across the plains of the Serengeti.

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
Cyril Christo & Marie Wilkinson, Conservation Photographers, Authors & Wildlife Documentary Producers - USA
We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.
