Accommodation & Tour Experience At Ruzizi Tented Lodge

Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Ruzizi Tented Lodge

Opened to off-beat travelers in 2013, the Ruzizi Tented Lodge allows you to experience the unforgettable charm and natural beauty of Akagera National Park. Concealed in forests of acacia and brachystegia trees, beside the Lake Ihema in northeastern Rwanda, you can spend time in peace and solitude broken only by the songs of some of the 500 species of birds and calls of wildlife that the park is known for.

This deluxe lakeside vacationing accommodation is built entirely of eco-friendly materials sourced from the forest using sustainable methods. In most sections, the original vegetation is left intact. You will be walking on wooden boardwalks that lead to the reception area, lounge, dining area, and tents.

Fondly constructed by local craftsmen, Ruzizi is adorned with touches of Rwandan culture represented by authentic artwork, vibrant and colorful fabrics and woven baskets for light shades. Solar energy powers the camp. Overlooking the lake, make your way to one of the 9 tents where you will be staying for the duration of your tour in Akagera.

Shaded and cooled by the spreading trees and palms that also accord you complete privacy, seven of the tents can sleep two guests, and are furnished with a large queen size or twin beds. You could also opt for the family tent that can sleep up to four guests. Each of the tents has an ensuite bathroom, seating space, wardrobe for unpacking and a small desk.

For more adventurous holidaymakers, the camp offers a treetop tent built on stilts at the height of four meters. Aside from a king-sized bed and hammock, the tented tree room has a standalone bath and an al fresco shower. As the sun sets over the lake, you will see hippos amble out of the water for a starlit dinner of grass and other greens.

Dine on wholesome meals cooked by the camp’s staff, and enjoy the superb sunsets around a warm campfire on the viewing deck under the shade of a fig tree facing the lake. Spend your days on game drives to view the Big Five of Africa, the elephant, rhino, Cape buffalo, lion, and leopard. Rwanda is also proud to host a rare species of antelope, Sitatunga that lives mostly in the marshlands.

Look for grazers like zebra, giraffe, oribi, waterbuck, eland, duiker, impalas and others herbivores. Among the other predators, you can sight jackals, hyenas, serval and mongoose. The Akagera Park is a birdwatcher's haven in Rwanda, and you might be able to spot the shoebill, gonolek, barbet, woodpeckers swamp flycatcher, fish eagle and many species of chats, to name a scarce few.

Another great way to take pictures of birds is to go on a bush walking trail in the company of an expert tracker. He will also introduce you to the flora and smaller life of the park hidden in the undergrowth, from insects, reptiles, amphibians to animal spoor, carcass and scat. Look for lizards, frogs, tortoises and other smaller denizens of the bush. Go boating or spend time fishing at Lake Shakani and enjoy the taste of your freshly cooked catch.

At the end of your trip, you could stop by at the Akagera Gift Shop and pick up some lovely souvenirs like brightly colored kits, purses, and beautiful woven baskets. Do keep in mind that the profits earned from your stay will be diverted to the upkeep of the park and to support the local community.

Things To Note When Staying At Ruzizi Tented Lodge

  1. Ruzizi does not offer in-house spa facilities.
  2. Family room exists, but the lodge lacks family-friendly facilities e.g. pool.
  3. Not a premier, upscale accommodation. An excellent, intimate accommodation, the lodge caters to guests looking for an affordable nature holiday.
  4. Lack of competition of other accommodations in the park limits the camp to upgrade itself to a premier accommodation.
  5. Standard tents aesthetics could be better.
