Hugging the verdant slopes of the hills around the Lake Kivu is a small, economy stayover, the Cormoran Lodge. Located in the scenic waterfront town of Kibuye, this lodge is constructed mostly of wood raised on stilts giving you the impression of staying in a log cabin on your lakeside vacation in Rwanda. Enjoy the superb views of the shimmering, blue waters of the lake even as the 60 bird species inhabiting the locale entertain you with their melodies. The flowers and lush greenery create a lovely backdrop for the relaxed siestas you can take in the comfortable loungers set up on the sandy ledge beside the lake. Walk down to the waters skimming the shore and splash around. Since Lake Kivu has no crocodiles or hippos, you can also safely go for cool-off dips in it. Walk along wooden walkways and paved stony paths to access the 7 cabins where you will be spending your lakeside travel time. Each of the rooms faces the lake with its picturesque green islands, and you can choose from rooms with a double bed or twin beds for your beach holiday. You also have the option of choosing the VIP cabin that offers you views of the volcanic cone of Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of Congo. With walls, ceilings, and floors of wood, your room will offer a cozy spot to relax in while the verandah outside has a comfortable seating area to revel in the gentle breezes from the lake. The beds have mosquito netting suspended from the ceiling and are spacious with a seating arrangement with a small desk and chair. You can also use the small fridge and television. Ensuite bathrooms include a shower area and are adorned with Rwandan stone detailing. One of the rooms has a bathroom with double vanities and a bathtub also. Dine on wholesome, home-cooked meals in the lodge's restaurant adorned with local crafts. You can also choose to take your meals al fresco on the deck facing the lake. While you can spend your entire trip enjoying the tranquility of Lake Kivu, you can go exploring the varied attractions that the area is known for. The tea and coffee plantations and processing plants at Kinunu and Cyimbili are interesting places to spend time tasting the warm, aromatic beverage that Rwanda is well-known for. Hiking enthusiasts and mountain bikers can hire cycles and trail the scenic routes of the Congo Nile trail or around the local villages. You must also go exploring the neighboring towns of Cyangugu and Rubavu that are only two of the many settlements around the lake. You can indulge in the distinct water sports available to active-tourists. For instance, hire a traditional fishing canoe and try angling for the small isambaza fish using the ancient casting techniques of the local fishermen. You could also go jet-skiing, windsurfing or on a catamaran ride. You must take the time to explore the isles around the lake and discover their unique biomes. Visit the Napoleon Island, and you can view the colony of bats that have taken up residence there. Sea kayaking is yet another sport you can enjoy during your time here. And, spend a pleasant evening on the lake while watching the spectacular sunsets.
