The resilience of Rwandan nature has been proven once more in Gishwati-Mukura National Park. During your travels through the woodland reserve, you will notice that distinct species of flora and fauna are making a comeback and flourishing in response to the efforts of conservationists. Go chimpanzee and primate trekking in this part of Rwanda and you could spot a family of endangered eastern chimps, mountain monkeys (also called L'Hoest monkeys), black and white colobus monkeys, blue or diademed monkeys, and golden monkeys. Other animals present here include the black front duiker, serval, red river hog, and southern tree hyrax.

The reserve of Gishwati-Mukura is also home to more than 130 species of birds, 14 of which are native to the Albertine Rift region. Birdwatchers to Rwanda will enjoy spotting the grey-crowned crane and martial eagle, along with the white-headed wood hoopoe, mountain yellow warbler, and old world warbler. Botanists can go on long hikes along the Congo-Nile Trail near Lake Kivu to be rewarded with sightings of beautiful flora, including giant tree ferns, bamboo, native hardwoods, deciduous trees, and blue lichen, just some of the 58 species of shrubs and trees in the region. This incredible diversity supports many species of butterflies and amphibians, including toads and chameleons, which you can photograph as visual mementos of your trip. As part of efforts to further develop the tourism experience in the reserve, plans have been made to create a Canopy Walk similar to one in Nyungwe National Park.

EAST AFRICA SAFARI BOOKING TRIP IDEA FOR GISHWATI-MUKURA IN RWANDA

When visiting Gishwati-Mukura, we recommend combining it with a gorilla and primate safari to Volcanoes (Parc National de Volcans), Nyungwe and a city tour of Kigali. You may optionally extend out to other wilderness areas of Akagera ending with a beach vacation at Lake Kivu or even extending out to the exotic spice island of Zanzibar or Lamu, or even Mombasa.
