BAWE ISLAND LODGE IN ZANZIBAR
Bawe Island Lodge offers you the perfect, albeit unpretentious venue for an idyllic vacation in Africa that is completely cut off from most modernization. Located five miles off the west coast of Zanzibar, it is accessible by a 30-minute boat ride. As you land on the soft white sands augmented by the tickling tepid waters of the Indian Ocean, you will be charmed by its silence and its casual, laid back ambience. The island hotel is located on a small nook of the beach that surrounds it on three sides. As you walk through the big, metal-studded, Zanzibari wooden doors into the main areas, it will seem like there are no pathways, just the powdery sand beneath your feet. Each of its 15 cottages is aligned southwards to allow the cool ocean breezes to waft through them. Thatched roofs and mud walls with a spacious patio outside and colorful coastal interiors bring a smile to your lips. The shaded deck is furnished with comfortable rope day beds for naps when you are not exploring the shallow depths of the sea on snorkeling expeditions while on your boat trip around the coral reefs of Zanzibar (read more on where else to stay). Rough-hewn furniture including a wooden bed seemingly balanced on a dhow and mosquito nets suspended from the ceiling, adds to the rustic comfort of the room. The hotel restaurant is another flamboyant place where you are served hearty meals. Here, the bar is set up inside an old dhow with the bartender mixing your drinks while standing on it. This is the authentic intimacy of Zanzibar! While you could spend your entire trip in Tanzania lounging on the beach and enjoying the breathtaking vistas of the shimmering Indian Ocean in front of you, you could also spend an entire day aboard a fishing dhow or boat at one of the deep sea sites around the tropical island. Dependent on the season, there are varied fishes here that you can try catching such as wahoo, tuna, sailfish, kingfish, swordfish, marlins and many more. Both novices and seasoned anglers can receive ocean wisdom from the experienced skipper on board. Make you way to the main island of Zanzibar and discover its many ancient treasures such as the olden bazaars of Stone Town, its capital and the architectural wonders that each mark a different era in Zanzibar's rich cultural past. Even as you wander through the narrow labyrinth streets with your AfricanMecca guide, you can shop for enchanting curios as souvenirs of your island holiday in East Africa at the tiny dukas. You could also sample the delicious fresh seafood, cooked on the spot for you at a local restaurant. Zanzibar was once a vital anchorage on the trade route thanks to the spices that grow here. Visit the seasoning plantations during your day tour of Stone Town where you can also learn about the medicinal properties of the spices even as you understand how they are harvested and utilized for meal preparations. Bite into the luscious fruit, unique to the island and take home lingering memories of their delightful taste. For a primate viewing experience on your wilderness travel in Zanzibar, visit the Jozani Forest Reserve. Here you can watch the red colobus monkeys in their natural habitat, feeding, grooming and caring for their young.

The Zanzibar Stone Town tour guide was superlative. He was outstanding and gave us undivided attention. We felt that was great value and to be escorted round the market place and slave stations was like walking in a living museum.

I booked my safari holiday through AfricanMecca. They were the most helpful company I have ever dealt with and I work within the travel industry. I had the most amazing time. The holiday went as clockwork with no hitches anywhere.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.
Denise Paterson - Belmont, Australia
Ras Nungwi was a beautiful property, the pristine white beach not more than forty feet from our lovely room, the Indian Ocean sublime. Raza, it was the vacation of a lifetime, again, thanks so much.
