ZANZIBAR PALACE HOTEL IN STONE TOWN
Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar, is an East African ancient settlement that has maintained all of its original centuries-old charms when travelers, explorers, traders, would-be settlers and rulers streamed through the island metropolis from the mainland coast of Tanzania. In the Kiponda section of this town and close to the Ismaili Jamaat-khana is the Zanzibar Palace Hotel. Once a merchant's home and located over three floors, the building has been converted into a deluxe accommodation for like-minded boutique guests (read more on other places stay in Stone Town with AfricanMecca). Traditional Zanzibari furniture, Persian rugs, wall hangings, beautiful draperies, colored glass panels, delicately crafted lamps and other artifacts make the place a quintessential living space that is very delightful. Enter a metal-studded doorway and you will step into the lobby of the hotel. The 9 air-conditioned rooms on the three upper floors have a decor that reflects Arabian, Indian and Colonial influences. The Nadia Room, Kijani Suite and Farizah Suite are all located on the first floor. Both the Nadia Room and the larger Farizah Suite have a sitting area while the Kijani Suite includes a separate lounge. The second floor houses the Rosewood, Sultana Suite and Shaba Suite. The Shaba Suite has a distinct lounge similar to that of the Kijani Suite while the Rosewood and Sultana Suite have seating areas. The Arabica Suite and Palace Suite Sherali are on the third floor. The Zanzibar Palace Hotel offers a special treat for holidaying honeymooners in the form of the Palace Suite Duniya, a memorable secluded, romantic setting in the form of a private sundeck and an open-air bathroom. This bathroom is actually located on the terrace of the building and can be accessed by a few steps.
You will have your meals in the hotel’s restaurant and bar that is located on the ground floor. They have a diverse selection of local cuisine including choices for vegetarians. The hotel also has an in-house spa where you can relax with soothing massages. The bazaars of Stone Town have a lot to offer island vacationers and as you go exploring the labyrinth streets, you will encounter many tiny dukas (stores) that sell you Swahili fabrics, beautiful bead jewelry, spices, handcrafted artifacts and unusual fruits that grow on the island. Shop for exquisite mementos of your trip and later, go viewing the many architectural relics of the island, each of which marks a different historical era and cultural advent. You will see the Bait-al-Sahel or the Sultan's Palace, Tippu Tip House, Forodhani Gardens, Old Fort and Anglican Church. Listen with awe to the tales behind the creation of each of these wonders. Do add a tour of the dense Jozani Forest located in the floral heart of Zanzibar. This woodland reserve has been set aside for the endangered primate, the red colobus monkey, but also houses many unique species of flora, smaller fauna like butterflies, reptiles like geckos, lizards, and amphibians like frogs. You can watch and photograph the primates as they look for food and groom one another. After that, visit a wholesome spice farm and your AfricanMecca guide will talk to you about the many uses of the seasonings besides flavoring food. They are used to make medicines, color fabrics and also in spiritual rituals. For underworld explorers, you can snorkel or dive around the protected Indian Ocean marine reserves of Chumbe and Mnemba.

The Zanzibar Stone Town tour guide was superlative. He was outstanding and gave us undivided attention. We felt that was great value and to be escorted round the market place and slave stations was like walking in a living museum.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.
Denise Paterson - Belmont, Australia
Ras Nungwi was a beautiful property, the pristine white beach not more than forty feet from our lovely room, the Indian Ocean sublime. Raza, it was the vacation of a lifetime, again, thanks so much.
