GUIDE ON THE RETREAT SELOUS IN TANZANIA
A luxurious Tanzania vacation at The Retreat Selous is an amazing blend of excitement, wonderment and relaxation. With a duty to preserve Africa's natural beauty and the traditions and culture of the local Tanzanian people, the camp gives you a rustically luxurious and yet truly authentic African experience. The staff are attentive, yet understands when privacy is desired, and you always feel welcomed. The camp includes a structure known as "The Fort," a World War II observation point that offers 360-degree views. To relax your tired muscles and rejuvenate your mind, take a swim in one of the camp's sparkling swimming pools or immerse yourself in a bit of pampering at the outdoor River Spa. Located in a remote corner of pristine wilderness, The Retreat offers a variety of activities for your tour of Selous. These activities give you a once in a lifetime opportunity to see an array of herbivorous fauna, such as elephant, buffalo, hippo, eland, giraffe, zebra and many others. With so many prey animals in the area, the stealthy predators, such as lion, hyena, leopard and many others are tracked in the vegetation opening, grass strands and bushes, where they may be watching for a chance to capture their next meal. AfricanMecca guests may also see the African Wild Dog, an endangered canine carnivore that roams the plains. These pack animals are as beautiful “painted” as they are formidable, unforgiving and ferocious hunters with an 80% success rate.
Accommodation At The Retreat SelousAs you plan your luxury and glamorous holiday in Africa at The Retreat Selous, look forward to enjoying a lavish tented suite with a thatch roof set among some of Africa's most pristine wilderness. The 12 luxury tented suites are designed with four different styles and a theme, such as Adventure, Awareness, Romance in Africa, Family Delight and Spiritual Retreat. Each suite is decorated with authentic African influences set against soft neutral tones with touches of deep, rich red. The Retreat Selous offers you a variety of suite locations, such as the 6 Eagle Nest Suites located at the top of a hill near the main house. Guests staying at Eagle Nest are allocated shared vehicles with others in-camp guests. The 3 River Suites are located on the edge of the river with its own private plunge pool and a very spacious deck. If you are going to be newlyweds who are planning your honeymoon travel in Africa, the Lion's Suite is the perfect romantic getaway with a personal dining area and plunge pool, or optionally, you can spend the night in an open tree house known as the "Love Nest." AfricanMecca guests staying at the River Suites and the Lion's Suite are provided a dedicated personal guide and private safari vehicle for game drives. For small groups and families on safari in Africa, The Retreat Selous offers Hippo Point, an exclusive, private location where you feel completely secluded within the African bush. Located more than two miles from The Fort, Hippo Point has two very spacious suites on each side connected by a private swimming pool. Each suite has a private sundeck and plunge pool. When staying at Hippo Point, AfricanMecca guests have access to the private bar, lounge, dining area, chef and butler, and private spa treatments are available in your Hippo Point suite. The differentiating safari experience at Hippo Point is you have exclusive use of a private guide and all activities are private too, operating at your own choosing and pace from game driving, boating and walking safaris which offer maximum personalization and convenience.
Safari At The Retreat SelousThe Retreat Selous safari activities include game drives, walking safaris and boating safaris, subject to river water level. These activities are offered in the morning and afternoon, and you should have enough time to participate in two activities each day. At The Retreat Selous, depending on the service booked via AfricanMecca, your Selous tour activities are tailored to your desires and preference, so you never feel rushed. Games drives are offered in the morning and afternoon, and you travel in the comfort of an open 4x4 safari vehicle. Your safari guide travels in relation to the strategic location and wildlife experiences, and will patiently describes animal behavior, habitats, species and much more (read more on when is the best time to visit Selous for an off-beat African safari). Your guide has a breadth of knowledge about Selous Game Reserve that translates into once-in-a-lifetime African wildlife viewing experiences. Because the animals roam freely within the reserve, your guide may use the two-way radio to exchange real-time updates with select guides in the area whom both may have come across other fresh paw or hoof prints. Slow paced walking safaris in Tanzania give you a unique opportunity to view and pass by wildlife from a safe distance while exploring the African flora and smaller denizens. The guide educates you about the ecology, tracking techniques, wildlife droppings, homeopathic uses of plants, bird species and the small five. An armed guard also accompanies you for safety reasons. Imagine drifting along the river watching the crocodile glide through the water. Ahead, what appears as two rocks protruding from the water turns out to be a hippo initiating to yawn or shading during the heat of the day. Boating safaris give you this amazing experience, and you may also fish for Tiger Fish and Catfish which may be released back or brought back to the lodge to be prepared.
Dining At The Retreat SelousDeep in the African bush, whichever suite you are staying in, AfricanMecca guests will always enjoy wonderful meals in a quiet setting with personal service during your safari trip in Selous. Depending on where your suite is located, you may dine at the main restaurant at The Fort, Sunset Pool, Hippo Point private dining area, in your suite or at one of the surprise locations in the bush. Dining in the bush is one of the most memorable experiences of your Tanzania safari, and weather permitting, you may request one of these special meals. The chefs of The Retreat Selous are skilled and experienced at preparing sumptuous and delicious meals using local, organic ingredients. In the morning, your day begins with a warm drink of coffee, tea and biscuits or rusks, and then you head out to view the wildlife during your morning safari activity. When you return to the camp, a full breakfast awaits you, such as eggs, waffles, cereal, scones, fresh fruit, cheeses and much more. Lunch time brings more gastronomical delights to savor, such as platters of fruits, salad cooked meats and vegetable options in varied dishes supplemented with fresh juices and fused alcohol cocktails. In the afternoon, you reflect upon your discoveries from the morning and plan your afternoon activities over a delightful cup of tea. As the sun sets upon your day of touring Tanzania, sip upon a tasty cocktail watching the sunset, and then enjoy a divine dinner of choice selections, such as beef steaks, poultry, fish, salads, vegetables, soups, desserts and much more.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.
Denise Paterson - Belmont, Australia
We had an absolutely unforgettable time. Both our guides were outstanding with so much knowledge. At Selous Game Reserve, we found a group of wild dogs cooling off near a pool of water. The safari was everything we had hoped for.
Gunnar and Liz Kristiansen - Ontario, Canada
I booked my safari holiday through AfricanMecca. They were the most helpful company I have ever dealt with and I work within the travel industry. I had the most amazing time. The holiday went as clockwork with no hitches anywhere.
Shelley Roberts - Hemel Hempstead, United Kingdom
AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
