A photographer’s dream adventure, bonding family safari and romantic-honeymoon getaway in the wilderness of Tanzania awaits at Roho ya Selous, a name that means “heart of Selous.” Located in the center of the reserve, this luxurious tented camp precincts the waters that connect Lake Manze with Lake Nzerakera. The days are action-packed while the nights are beyond enchanting. The wildlife that seems only steps away from your tent may include a meandering giraffe along a dirt path, a hefty hippo rushing to the nearby water’s surface and fish eagles always on the lookout for a tasty meal.

The eight 60-square meter boutique tents are distanced to allow for an exclusively premier wilderness holiday escape amidst Nyerere National Park (Selous). Each tent features a décor that mirrors the earthen tones of the Selous ecosystem, such as mixed tan and white stone floors, olive green safari-style lounging chairs, taupe mosquito netting and drapes and elegant linens. The bed is coupled with nightstands and lamps to allow for bedtime reading, and the overhead “evening breeze” system is a must-have for staying cool on warm nights. The ensuite bathroom features all the comforts you would expect from an upmarket accommodation in the bush, such as hot running water, flush toilet, and indoor/outdoor shower.

The family tent at Roho ya Selous includes a children’s room complete with ensuite bathroom, perfect for families traveling with children or even small groups of friends. Because the camp is strategically located in the heart of the reserve, AfricanMecca guests need not travel far to begin your personal bush experience. The upscale camp also offers complimentary laundry service, Wi-Fi, and personal in-room lock boxes.

As the warmth of sunrise drifts into your tent at Roho ya Selous, an attendant brings aromatic pots of tea and coffee to be savored on your private verandah overlooking the wilderness. Breakfast can be served one of three ways. You can have lighter fare before your morning game drive, arrange breakfast in the southern Tanzania bush ecology or stave off your hunger for a hot buffet-style breakfast after the early tour of the reserve.

We recommend that you take a game drive to start your fantastical trip in the bush, but you also have the option of a guided nature walk to explore the smaller lifeforms of Nyerere Park (Selous). No matter how you plan the morning, you are certain to see a splendid mix of animals. Lions, leopards, jackals and other stealthy predators may be lounging in the shade whilst giraffes, greater kudus, zebras, sable antelopes, elephants, buffaloes, elands and other herbivores forage for tasty grasses and leaves.

At the banks of rivers and lakes, watch carefully for hippos, crocodiles, aquatic birds and other species that spend most of the time in the water. Even with all this flora and fauna, though, the highlight of your nature vacation may be catching a glimpse of African wild dogs, and Nyerere Park (Selous) has the largest population of these energetic and ferocious pack hunters. Your guide returns to camp where you can have a hot breakfast or retire to your tent for a nap, reading and other leisurely pastimes.

The chefs prepare a lunch of fresh vegetables and salads with a delicious main dish to satisfy your appetite so that you can explore the grounds, go fishing or engage one of the guides into a lively conversation about the avi-fauna around the camp. At mid-afternoon, cake and tea are served, and you head back out into the reserve for a second game drive or boating safari, both of which include sundowners. Return to camp for cocktails and a three-course delicious dinner served at a communal table where the conversation is as delightful as the stars that twinkle in the ebony African sky. These experiences are the nuances of a luxury safari in Tanzania.

  • AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
