GUIDE ON TENT WITH A VIEW IN TANZANIA
Tent With A View is a delectable private beach getaway between the relaxing Indian Ocean and the wild Saadani National Park, offering a combination of tropical beach relaxation and exciting wildlife safari tours in Tanzania with AfricanMecca. On the north east coastal edge of the park, soft white tan sands scattered with bizarre driftwood shapes stretch for many kilometers alongside clear, warm, blue seas, alive with 40 varieties of fish, humpback whales, dolphins and turtles. Traditional dhows may be seen as fishermen from local villages harvest the rich abundance of giant prawns, red snappers and other delicacies that breed in the Indian Ocean. Also, accessible is the Mafui sandbanks, a snorkeler’s African marine holiday dream, and in the mangrove swamps further south where smaller fauna, birds and primates thrive. Saadani National Park is unprecedented in its mix of habitats, from oxbow lakes on the meandering Wami River with their populations of hippo, crocodile and wading birds to the tropical forest of Zaraninge with its resident elusive leopard, kudu and Suni antelope, via tall grasslands crossed by elephant, buffalo and zebra, and short, dry vegetation on black cotton soil traversed by omnipresent warthogs. It is possible to drive to Tent With A View from Dar Es Salaam but easier to fly in by light aircraft to Mkwaja Airstrip even from Zanzibar where you will be met and taken for your first thrilling trip in Saadani, through the park to your accommodation along the coast.
Accommodation At Tent With A ViewTent With A View is a spectacular, dynamic base for living with the vagaries of nature and the unpredictability of ambient wildlife. It is an African travel experience without equal: a quirky combination of beach relaxation and subtle wilderness adventure in an area that combines natural ocean-bush loveliness with man-made comfort and convenience. 11 tented bandas are raised on stilts in groves of coconut palms looking out over the sea and forest, linked by sandy paths to an elevated central lodge, high above the idyllic beach, where you can drink, dine and dream on your authentic Tanzanian vacation as you contemplate the endless azure sea. Furnishings are plain and pleasing, hand-made and comfortable. Lighting is by generators along with hurricane lamps; charging stations are available. Salt water is supplied to the bathroom, and complimentary fresh water for drinking and brushing is provided. Ten clean and airy “Highlife” branded tented bandas are doubles or twins, set amidst coconut palms. Three of which are family bandas sleeping up to five people. The Venus Honeymoon Suite stands alone beside a mangrove copse shading a dipped bath. All suites are elevated on tall stilts to catch the breeze, and have wooden decking with a restful hammock on a private balcony, accessed by wooden stairs. On AfricanMecca’s tour of Saadani, guests can also stay overnight at an observation tower called “The Roof of Saadani”, within the park itself to enjoy fantastic panoramic views across this unique coastal reservation (read more on where else to stay in Saadani Park on your bush and beach safari).
Safari At Tent With A ViewBegin your Tent With A View safari at the Saadani Wildlife Research Centre to learn about the efforts being made to protect the wildlife you have come to see. Then take a sea cruise to view marine life or pop in at a coastal village to meet the local people. Around the camp itself, there are various activities, from guided walks by day, birding forays or canoe trips on nearby Mafui River. In order to find hippo and crocodile on the Wami River within Saadani National Park, it is best to set out in the early morning from your camp, combining a full day of river cruise with a game viewing drive in a vehicle adapted for the purpose with open sides, a roof shade, tiered seating and onboard 2-way radio. You can also take a picnic lunch with you. Your guide, experienced in the ways of the wildlife he loves, will trail down and take you to see your favorite primates, be they tree-dwelling Colobus monkeys like white-shawled old men with white face-scarves and black fur hats, or yellow baboons, marching, tails erect, in family formations by the track. He will take you to find unusually shy elephant and even an enigmatic leopard in the thick forest with great luck. Lions are hard to spot in the long grass, but he may direct your gaze to a well-camouflaged pride stalking a frail-legged wildebeest or sway-necked giraffe. Whatever you decide to do, you will be changed forever on your AfricanMecca safari trip to Tanzania.
Dining At Tent With A ViewOn arrival at Tent With A View, AfricanMecca guests are greeted with refreshing towels and cold drinks, establishing a pattern of considerate African safari welcome service. Morning beverages are brought to your verandah before you take a walk on the serene and stunningly beautiful beach, alone and totally at peace (read more on when is the best time to visit Saadani for an off-beat African safari). It is like having your own private tropical beach. You will possibly find an artistic natural driftwood sculpture, or a hatching of delicate baby green turtles, determinedly churning their way to the sea. Breakfast in the spacious dining area is a healthy combination of fresh bread, fruit, cereals and cooked egg dishes, often in the company of vervet monkeys venturing in from the beach, after which you continue your aquatic tour of Africa with a river or sea cruise. A picnic lunch or a collation served in the main building prepares you for your next adventure. Return for a sundowner cocktail from the eminently well-supplied bar before a fantastic choice of giant prawns and other delectable seafood is prepared in the back kitchen and served as part of an amazing five-course meal at a shared table on the beach, lit by romantic lanterns and sometimes visited by wide-eyed bush babies. Outside the bandas and main building, despite the diamond bright swathes of stars darkness is absolute, since there is no light pollution (view map of Saadani to appreciate its remoteness). But you are safely escorted by a resident staff as you venture to and from the communal area.

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
