BUTIAMA BEACH IN MAFIA
Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Butiama Beach
Sitting beside a beautiful white sand seashore near a fishing village with vistas of the breathtaking azure blue of the Indian Ocean is an intimate, laidback property where you can spend your barefoot seaside vacation immersed in the charm of East African island living. This is Butiama Beach on Mafia Island, south of Zanzibar Island. Well-landscaped gardens are separated by sandy walkways that lead to the lounge cum bar and dining area. You can relax in the open lounge that has a thatched roof supported by a coconut framework with sandy floors and is bathed by the gentle ocean zephyrs. Take a leisurely dip in the swimming pool or nap beside it. You could also go over to the beach and spend a lazy afternoon under a makuti parasol. You will be staying in one of the 7 individual bungalows, each of which offers part views of the ocean across the gardens. Romantically named Lalas, the Swahili word for ‘Sleep” the bungalows come furnished with either double or twin beds. Few of them are larger with two bedrooms and can accommodate families and small groups of AfricanMecca travelers. The bungalows have polished stone floors and thatched roofs while the furniture is crafted out of recycled dhow wood. You can load your valuables in the electronic safety deposit box and put away your things in the open rack provided. Have a dream siesta in the hammock or a lively conversation while seated in the living area on the patio. Butiama Resort’s restaurant, the Chiringuito, is an airy area that reflects the decor of the rest of the establishment. You will be served flavorsome, homely meals including an array of Swahili and seafood dishes. You can order tea, coffee and herbal drinks at any time to help reenergize you. Or, order alcoholic drinks and cocktails in the lounge bar or the beachfront bar. Take a break from your vacation relaxations on the beach to go exploring the tranquil charm of Mafia attractions. As you tour the island with your AfricanMecca guide, you will be struck by the care the people take to preserve the authenticity of this little paradise. They still construct their traditional dhows by hand just as they have for centuries and grow crops like beans, cassava, coconuts, paw-paw, mangoes, pineapples and many more. You can also take a lesson in basket and mat weaving or wander through the quaint bazaars looking at trading goods like freshly caught seafood, organic fruits, pink onions, taters, spices and colorful Swahili textiles, to name a few. Take a trip to the varied exhilarating scuba diving and snorkeling marine sites around Mafia Island and discover a superb world of living coral reefs, their distinct shapes and forms concealing a dazzling diversity of reef life. Have a once in a lifetime thrilling experience of spotting resident whale sharks off the coast of the island. Swim in their company and you will see these gentle giants feed on planktons. Go angling with the local Tanzanian fishermen to pick up a tip on traditional fishing techniques or seek out game fish in the deep waters such as marlins, swordfish, sailfish, dorado, yellowfin tuna and others. Back onshore, you can view the enchanting flora and fauna, endemic to the island including the rare Comores fruit bat on Chole Island. Visit the Kua Ruins on Juani Island or peek into history at Kisimani before returning to Butiama Beach to spend a starry-eyed evening with your loved one watching the glorious sunset over the vast Indian Ocean.

The Zanzibar Stone Town tour guide was superlative. He was outstanding and gave us undivided attention. We felt that was great value and to be escorted round the market place and slave stations was like walking in a living museum.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.

Ras Nungwi was a beautiful property, the pristine white beach not more than forty feet from our lovely room, the Indian Ocean sublime. Raza, it was the vacation of a lifetime, again, thanks so much.
