GUIDE ON LAKE NATRON CAMP IN TANZANIA

Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Lake Natron Camp

What some may label as a more hostile geological landscape in East Africa, Lake Natron offers our mid-range guests with a rare opportunity to explore unique scenery that is home to flora and fauna that is often showcased in nature travel documentaries from around the world. The shimmering lake stands in contrast to remnants of volcanic activity and ancient human presence, creating a spectacular setting for adventurists, history buffs, photographers, and bird lovers alike.

Lake Natron is located at the lowest point of the Great Rift Valley, and the higher temperatures cause water to evaporate, leaving behind soda lakes that support an abundance of zooplankton and algae. These food sources attract waterfowl, including massive populations of flamingoes that use the area as breeding grounds.

Stemming along the edge of the lake is a series of natural springs, some of which provide fresh drinking water for wildlife of all sizes. Lake Natron Camp is sited at one of the pools fed by the freshwater springs near Ol Donyo Lengai. The camp operates on a private concession that is leased from the Ngare Sero village where guests can visit to learn about the Maasai and their traditions.

The mission of Lake Natron Camp is to provide deluxe accommodations to AfricanMecca guests while working in unison with the local community and minimizing environmental impact. The entire camp is completely removable and designed to restore the natural ecosystem within three months’ time. Water is transported by camels from nearby villages to reduce the carbon footprint of the camp operations.

The main mess tent is designed with unfettered 360-degree views. To the north is Lake Natron, and Ol Donyo Lengai is to the south. The central tent features Bedouin-style furniture, bar, small fridge, WiFi access and the only charging station in camp for phones and small electronics.

Accommodation At Lake Natron Camp

The 10 guest tents are perched upon elevated verandahs with impeccable views. The interior of the tents includes a sleeping area and ensuite with shower, washbasin, and composting toilet. Each tent has a king-size bed with the option of adding two twin beds if desired for your heavenly holiday. The furniture is crafted from recycled plastic and greenwood by East African artisans. Imagine yourself relaxing with a refreshing cocktail whilst watching the sun setting over the Masonic Mountains – moments like these are unparalleled among wilderness vacations with AfricanMecca (best time to visit Lake Natron).

Safari At Lake Natron Camp

Although Lake Natron is off the beaten path from other Tanzanian bush locations, the area offers abundant safari activities for every mid-range guest. Start your day with a guided walk to the lake, birdwatching, or mountain biking. For longer outings, partake of one of the available hikes – Ngare Sero Source Adventure Hike, Ngare Sero Waterfall Hike, Rift Valley Day Hike, and Maji Motto, a lovely tour of the hot springs that offers almost endless opportunities for photographers and bird lovers.

If you desire the utmost adventure trip, take the strenuous multi-day hike up Ol Donyo Lengai – one of the most challenging in East Africa, or we can arrange a trek from Lake Natron to Ngorongoro. We also recommend that you plan time to visit the local Maasai village as part of your stay at Lake Natron Camp.

Dining At Lake Natron Camp

Cooking over charcoal, the chef skillfully prepares outstanding meals using local ingredients, and you may be treated to a traditional Maasai barbecue during your stay. Your breakfast may include an array of fresh fruit, juices, cereals, and some hot options. Lunch may be platters of salads, meats, cheeses, fruit, and more. Dinner is an affair that may be served via buffet-style or plated. The chef offers an appetizing tour of local and international flavors prepared with East African ingredients, such as meats, vegetables, fruits, bread, and other delightful foods.
