AUTHENTIC SAFARIS & PERSONALIZED TOURS IN SHIMBA HILLS WITH AFRICANMECCA
The dense forests and jungles of Shimba offer numerous opportunities for you to see smaller denizens amidst delicate plants. Although you see most of the wilderness beauty during your high-paced vehicle activities, there are many small details with a unique splendor of their own that are missed out while sitting. Bush walks give you the leisurely pace that is needed to explore every leaf, branch and tree. Looking within the foliage, you may see colobus, vervet to sykes’ monkeys and other small mammals, as well as some of the 230 recorded bird species. As you walk along the trail, pay close attention to the ground and middle level vegetation as this is where you may see several of the 295 types of butterflies in the reserve, as well as galago, lizard, shrew, mongoose and other smaller denizens. Butterflies are the centerpiece of a special local breeding project that you can learn about during the Shifoga Nature and Cultural Tour. Your cultural immersion continues with a visit to the local villages of the Digo and Duruma tribes. Watch traditional dances, help with food preparation, meet with traditional healers and interact with children at the Kwale School for the Deaf and Tsimba Orphanage. For our more physically fit guests, AfricanMecca recommends a hike to Sheldrick Falls for a relaxing picnic and refreshing swim in a natural pool. The 30-minute hike down to the falls is relatively easy, but the 45 to 60 minute return hike is quite strenuous depending on your fitness level.
