GUIDE ON LOYK TSAVO CAMP IN KENYA
The short-maned lions of Tsavo East National Park have been known through history for their ferociousness especially since few of them killed many railway line construction workers in 1899. Colonel J.H. Patterson finally trapped and put them down close to the site of today’s rebranded Loyk Tsavo Camp (formerly know as Patterson’s Safari Camp). Located deep inside Tsavo East National Park, on the edge of the Athi-Galana River, this economy camp allows guests traveling in Kenya a glimpse of that era around which the movie, ‘The Ghost and the Darkness' was themed around. You will be welcomed into the reception area with cool welcome drinks and refreshing towels. This area adjoins a bar and both have thatched roofs that keep the interiors cool in the hot, semi-arid climate of Tsavo East. Surrounded by thick riverside woodlands, the camp is a tranquil nook where elephants, impalas and zebras wander through and the nights are filled with the sounds of hippos grunting as they graze or slip into the river. 20 tents with attached bathrooms are available to AfricanMecca guests vacationing in this expanse. Maasai guards accompany you as you walk around the camp in case you meet an elephant bull or even a crocodile sunning itself after a hearty meal. Each of the tents is erected on a stone and concrete base and is sheltered under a roof of bamboo and thatch supported by wooden poles. The tent itself is made of a classic khaki canvas with a thatched roof and crazy-stone patio. Here you can sit and watch the birds in the trees with views of the resplendent Yatta Plateau backdrop creating a backdrop of the adjacent river flowing lazily by. While some of the tents have a four-poster double bed, others have single twin beds, all covered with mosquito netting. If you have a third guest or a child touring Kenya with you, an extra bed can be set up (read more on where else to stay in Tsavo East). The attached bathroom can be entered through a parting in the back and has basic amenities typical of a budget accommodation along with the bucket shower experience. Hammocks are sited along the riverside bank. Loyk Tsavo Camp's dining area is a cool, pleasant place decorated with woven wall hangings depicting animals and African motifs where you will be served buffet meals that include global and Kenyan cuisine and also a selection of vegetarian options. The camp also offers seafood brought over from the coast or Lake Victoria while the meat is sourced locally. If you have any specific dietary requests, the camp is happy to cater to your needs on your trip of Tsavo East Park, though prior notice is required via your AfricanMecca tour planner. You can also opt to have al-fresco lunch beside the river under the cool, breezy shade of the trees. You can also request for a bush breakfast that can be arranged for you at the end of your morning game drive. AfricanMecca Safaris arranges for custom-equipped safari vehicles for you that have a knowledgeable and experienced guide on board who will talk to you about the diverse fauna of Tsavo East with four of the Big Five of Africa, the leopard, lion, buffalo and elephant. Tsavo East also boasts of over 500 species of birds and on your nature walks, the naturalist directing you will track down birds' nests skillfully hidden in the shrubbery. Learn how to identify animal tracks, droppings and the fascinating medicinal properties of the trees and plants you see. End your early evening game drives with sundowner drinks in the bush ending with a tasty dinner, a fitting end to another extraordinary day on your bush holiday in the authentic wilds of East Africa.

Jambo Altaf, The service was first class and accommodation was out of this world, the staff at Tsavo could not do enough and if you required anything all you had to do was ask. Thank you for a most memorable experience.
