Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Travellers Mwaluganje Camp
For those guests who desire a budget elephant focused safari close to the coastal beaches of Diani, Tiwi and Galu – South Coast Mombasa, then Travellers Mwaluganje Elephant Camp located in the Shimba Hills ecology would a modest choice. The location is a corridor within the 6000-acre Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary bordering Shimba Hills National Reserve. The setup of Mwaluganje means that you have a community dedicated East African safari experience by seeing the benefits of government and local wildlife management strategies. The sanctuary is operated by the local Kwale communities of the Digo and Duruma tribes that have set aside a part of their native land to preserve and protect African elephants, one of the many species that is threatened by poachers, human encroachment and other environmental concerns. As a budget and the only camp in the sanctuary, Travellers Mwaluganje Elephant Camp celebrates the mighty and majestic pachyderms that hold the hearts and minds of many elephant loving AfricanMecca guests. For your economical Kenya equatorial vacation, choose from 20 guest tents with twin beds, and a third bed can be added if needed. The non-frill en-suite bathroom features a small washbasin, flush toilet and shower with hot and cold water. The centerpiece of the camp, though, is the elephants. From your private verandah, you watch these graceful and social creatures follow an ancient trail that they follow to find food and water. The camp is not fenced, so other wildlife may also wander by on their way to the watering hole on the property. To reach Travellers Mwaluganje Elephant Camp, you travel in a custom safari vehicle with a pickup from your beach holiday hotel around the coast of Mombasa (read more on where else to stay around Shimba Hills). Once in the wilderness of Shimba, the drive serves as only a small sampling of the thrills that await you during your adventurous tour of Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary. Each morning you awaken to a beautiful setting that invites and delights you. You freshen up before meeting your AfricanMecca guide for a morning game drive through the sanctuary, and optionally to Shimba Hills National Reserve. You are quite likely to see a number of the trunk fauna that wander through the property, as well as warthogs, zebras, bushbucks, to name a few of the species that you may spot. Game drives also take you through the dense forests where Sykes’ and Colobus monkeys and other tree dwellers scamper about, and the branches and bushes are filled with an impressive variety of avi-fauna. As the temperature rises during your outdoor African wildlife trip, your guide takes you back to camp for an adequate breakfast. Spend the remainder of your morning relaxing on your verandah, under a shady tree with an intriguing book or retire to your tent for a nap. Lunch is served to fill your belly once again, and you may use the rest of your afternoon to learn about the vital conservation work of the sanctuary. A late day game drive takes you back out into the bush to view wildlife behavior that is unique to the twilight hours. Finally, fend off the chill of the nighttime air around the campfire with cocktails while listening to the personal stories of other guests who are enjoying their outback travel in coastal Kenya. End your day with a simple dinner before retiring to your tent for bedtime.
