GUIDE ON JOY'S CAMP IN KENYA
Beholding out over a natural spring where many diverse animals and birds come to drink, the luxurious Joy's Camp, set against a backdrop of the golden greenery of Shaba National Reserve, is the premier location for an exciting yet tranquil safari vacation in East Africa. On your arrival, you will encounter a tiny boutique with distinct pointed-arched windows and doors that houses a collection of curios and other knick-knacks you might desire. Arranged around a small swimming pool, the reception, dining area and bar are all housed in open structures covered with canvas roofs. The wooden-stone decks outside are perfect for al fresco meals or for relaxing. You could also lounge in the deck chairs set up in the stone-paved, covered area beside the pool. On your request, drinks are served to you on site. The camp’s 10 large tents infuse an ambience of romance and adventure of the Swahili Nights into your glamorous tour of wild Kenya with AfricanMecca. They are erected on a low raised stone platform with a wide deck all around. Made of canvas and mesh-flap windows, with white and pastel-colored billowy curtains tied back with sashes, the capacious tents are placed at a distance from each other to accord you the privacy you need. The entrance to the tent is through tieback twin canvas flaps while netted windows let the cool air and light in. Subtle polished floors adorned with colorful rugs, keep the interiors cool and curved niches have little objet d'art and books placed in them. Seven of the tents have double beds and the other three have twin beds complete with mosquito netting for your protection and Borana-patterned bed linen for your comfort. Two added beds can be set up for families in each of the tents to accommodate kids below the age of 16 years. The attached bathrooms are at the back and include double basins, glass shower enclosure and other amenities typical of an upmarket accommodation. The wide verandah outside your tent is furnished with patio chairs, and you can spend time here on your personalized holiday in Shaba taking in the serenity of your surroundings. Joy's Camp is a good vantage point from where you can watch as herds of elephants, Beisa oryx, buffaloes, reticulated giraffes, Grevy's zebras and other thirsty denizens of Shaba visit the spring to drink or are traversing around. If you are lucky, you might also spot lions, regally making their way to it. To see the varied predators of Shaba like leopards, wild dogs, cheetahs and hyenas among others, go on game drives in custom-fitted safari vehicles with an experienced, well-informed guide on board (read more on when is the best time to go to Shaba in Northern Kenya). You can leave for your game drive trip in the early morning and return to the camp as the day heats up. The late afternoon is another superlative time for a drive when the animals stir as the sun dips westward and set out looking for meals. Look for Somali ostriches, waterbuck, gerenuks, klipspringers and many more. Guided nature-walk safaris let you peek into another hidden world of insects, reptiles, amphibians, colorful flowers in the thickets, animal tracks and droppings, birds' nests and unusual plants and trees. Visit the Ewaso Nyiro River banks to spot hippos and crocodiles or "Penny's Drop," a spectacular waterfall that feeds the river. Sign off your day on your adventurous AfricanMecca travels in Kenya with sundowner drinks in the wild or back at the camp for an early dinner before you once again go exploring Shaba during your optional night game drive. End your stay in Shaba with an authentic cultural tour of surrounding villages of the Samburu tribe.
