NGONG HOUSE IN NAIROBI
Located 18 miles from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Ngong House is set on private forested land in the suburbs of Langata, close to the site of the Karen Blixen Museum, a popular local attraction from the “Out Of Africa” book and movie, that you may choose to make a part of your exploratory trip to Nairobi. The most adventurous rooms for AfricanMecca guests at the lodge are the 6 amazing tree houses, and the lodge also offers a private cottage and family-friendly log cabin, as well as a suite in the main house should you prefer accommodations that are easily accessible. The mixed dwellings at the house can accommodate up to 24 guests on its 10 acre grounds. Each tree house is built on stilts to give you a sense of discreet seclusion, as well as elevated views of the Ngong Hills from your private veranda. The natural light floods the space to reveal a charming décor of native materials, as well as unique design elements, such as natural canoe-shaped bathtub, stained glass, ladder or spiral steps, trap doors and many other wonderful touches. Located near the swimming pool, the private cottage has an ambience all its own, with warm tones, open beam ceiling, wooden floors, private patio and a spacious bathroom with separate shower and bathtub. Small groups and families traveling in this part of Africa have plenty of cozy space inside the log cabin that features high open ceilings, log support columns, skylight and floor-to-ceiling windows, private shaded veranda, central fireplace, bar and sitting area. The suite in the main house is designed with all of the romance of a traditional safari experience in Kenya, complete with elegant armchairs around a stone fireplace, Persian rugs, soft lighting, wood floors and canopied bed.
As you near the lodge, you begin to see how Ngong House will be a special part of your memorable vacation to Kenya. A grained stone road leads to the property, and upon arrival, you are welcomed with warmth and enthusiasm by the attentive and friendly staff. Dense trees and flowering bushes line an open grass area where a single breakfast table is set for two under a shade of acacia, and the rondavel dining area offers a more rustic setting for evening cocktails around the fireplace before savoring every bite of a superb meal of fresh juicy lamb, lake tilapia fish from Victoria, varied seafood from the coast of Mombasa, a variety of locally-grown vegetables and many other culinary delights. Spend your days wandering the lodge property and stop by the boutique to see some of the exquisite clothing designs made of the finest fabrics, such as Irish linen, Indian printed silk, leather and even textiles that are hand-loomed by the boutique owner. Spend time learning about conservation efforts to protect the wildlife that you observe during your safari expeditions in East Africa by visiting the Giraffe Centre, Nairobi National Park and Elephant and Rhino Orphanage at David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and learn about the city’s colorful history at the Nairobi National Museum and Karen Blixen Museum (read more on when is the best time to travel to Nairobi with AfricanMecca).
