GUIDE ON SAMATIAN ISLAND LODGE IN KENYA
Escape to a private island getaway during your AfricanMecca wilderness travel in Kenya at Samatian Island Lodge, a 30-acre deluxe accommodation situated in Lake Baringo on the northern tip of the island. As a RAMSAR site, the lake and surrounding area are globally recognized for the ecologically-significant wetlands that attract more than 470 resident and migratory bird species, making the lake an absolute vacationing paradise for your birdwatching safari in Kenya. Because Lake Baringo is a freshwater lake that supports a high fish population, guests may see different bird species than what are typically found at Kenya’s renowned alkaline lakes. The lodge is designed to give guests a casual setting that encourages curiosity and quiet delight while exploring the island and lake. The 6 guest rooms have homely atmospheres including two-bedroom family cottages that give parents and children the extra space they need for a comfortable East African lake island holiday. All rooms feature mosquito netting, comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms and views, and some cottages have open-air bathrooms and showers that are nestled within the natural vegetation. Children of all ages are welcome, and the lodge offers special activities just for younger family members. Please note that the guest rooms at Samatian Island Lodge are open to nature, so guests who are uncomfortable with insects in their rooms may prefer another accommodation at Lake Baringo. Your island safari at Lake Baringo begins with watching the sunrise over the lake. Upon request, morning beverages can be brought to your room while you freshen up for your morning boat safari with an experienced ornithologist guide. Your guide is highly skilled in locating waterfowl, raptors, songbirds and other avian species, increasing your chances of recording a high diversity of resident and migratory feathered creatures. Along the cliffs watch for Verreaux eagles hunting for the tiny and charming rock hyraxes, goliath herons on the Rock of Gibraltar and the intriguing gabar goshawk. If you prefer, AfricanMecca can arrange a canoe trip to the neighboring island for a morning nature walk in the conservancy and bush breakfast. Return to Samatian Lodge for breakfast and a quick nap or light reading before lunch and a refreshing swim in the infinity pool. Afternoon tea rejuvenates you for a late-day nature walk, boating safari and community visit. We recommend a walking tour in the bushes surrounding Lake Baringo to see some of the smaller denizens of the island, as well as avian species that are challenging to locate by boat. You truly appreciate your guide’s expertise and knowledge as you seek out the avi-fauna in the scrub bushes around the lake (read more on when is the best time to visit Lake Baringo). As the day ends, find a relaxing spot on the beach for sundowners before a wonderful dinner overlooking the lake.
