GUIDE ON TASSIA LODGE IN KENYA
Sprawled on the side of the Mokogodo Hill with stunning views of acacia and newtonia trees in the valley below you, Tassia Lodge is a mid-range accommodation for AfricanMecca guests touring Laikipia. It is hosted by the Martin Wheeler, Antonia Hall and members of the Mokogodo Maasai community. The 60,000 conservancy acres of Lekurruki Community Ranch in the IL Ngwesi Valley in eastern Laikipia spreads all around you in its entire pristine splendor and offers the rare chance of exploring the essence of northern Kenya without the crowds of other travelers. What gives this lodge an edge above all others is that it gives you a glimpse of the eco-lifestyles of the Mokogodo Maasai who used to live in caves over a century ago before they started building "Inkajijik" (mud homes) and living in enclosed "Enkangs" fenced communities. Today, the rooms Tassia are cut into the natural landscape of the hill, leaving rocks and trees untouched where they are, yet creating a rustic deluxe living space complete with the essentials of homely living. The vaulted roofs are made of thatch and the furniture of rough wood and tree branches, contributing to the pleasing, unsophisticated, yet comfortable appeal of the lodge. Each of the 6 rooms of the lodge is sited apart from the other and has a distinctive setting and wild charm. In one of the rooms, you will find a tree trunk protruding through the shielded roof while, in another, there are steps leading up to a high deck furnished with a daybed and hammock for a quiet afternoon of tranquility on your wilderness vacation in East Africa. Since each room is perched on the side of the cliff, one side is open to the valley and you can watch as animals like waterbucks, Grevy's zebras, gerenuks, greater and lesser kudus, buffaloes, elephants and giraffes come to drink at the waterhole below you. The beds have mosquito nets suspended from the ceiling and the rooms are spacious enough to accommodate an extra bed. Woven, ethnic rugs grace the floor and handmade vases and lamps are placed in nooks and crannies to enliven the rural room. The lodge’s dining area offers homely comfort as you dine on the delicious meals cooked by local Maasai chefs with the guidance of Antonia Hall herself. She creates interesting dishes using organic produce and combines African, Mediterranean and Eastern flavors into her food. Antonia is an accomplished chef whose creations have been written about in leading international magazines such as Conde Nast and your culinary trip experience in Kenya with AfricanMecca will be made more memorable by the delectable fare she offers. After a hearty meal, head out to the horizon pool with a cool cocktail from the bar. And you might spot a kudu stretched up to a window, investigating the contents of a room. The mornings and late afternoons are great times to explore the rugged wilderness around you and safari vehicles with an expert guide are provided to you. You could have breakfast in the bush or carry along a packed lunch for an extended game viewing experience ending with a Maasai community visit. We recommend combining your game drive to include Lewa Conservancy as there is more abundance of wildlife in Lewa than in Lekurruki - IL Ngwesi Valley (read more on when is the best time to go to Laikipia). Go on long walks in the shrubland and the local naturalist accompanying you will tell you about the healing powers of the plants you see. Visit the Mokogodo Forest to take pictures of birds and do hike up Blood Mountain to spend time photographing the incredible beauty of Il Ngwesi from its summit. Go fly camping or camel and horseback riding or visit the ancestral homes of the Mokogodo Maasai in the caves. And last but not least, support the local communities by purchasing mementos during your Tassia cultural holiday in Laikipia at the lodge’s boutique.
