Menai Bay Conservation Zone
Menai Bay Conservation Zone is located southwest of Unguja Island; this 470 square kilometer marine and coastal area is a traditional fishing ground, containing extensive tropical fish species, sea grasses, coral reefs and several small islets supporting mangrove forests. In 1994, the Commission for Natural Resources (CNR) - Fisheries, invited the World Wide Fund for Nature to provide support to the Government of Zanzibar in order to enhance the management of these important coastal resources. The main purpose of this is to preserve in perpetuity the biological processes and productivity of the Zone and associated ecosystem for the benefit of the local population. Local communities participate fully in the planning and management programs and work alongside biological and socioeconomic research projects.
