Mazsons Hotel - Zanzibar, Stone Town
Mazsons is one of Zanzibar Island's most historic accommodations. In 1999, the hotel was a recipient of the 24th International award for Tourist, Hotel and Catering industry, presented in Madrid, Spain.
From a historical perspective of the structure, available records show that a wealthy Arab known as Said bin Dhanin constructed Mazsons Hotel Building most probably around the middle of the 19th Century. The building was officially registered in 1894 during the reign of Seyyid Hamed bin Thuwein. It was during this year that Zanzibar came under British Administration. At the dawn of the 20th Century, the building changed hands by inheritance to Msellen bin Mohamed, who in turn sold shortly thereafter for 2700 Indian Rupees. The building is on record to have been used as a hotel running under the name of Africa Hotel owned by a Greek lady by the name of Sendis. To date the culture of entertaining guests very much remains a part of the history of the building.
