UHURU TRAILS KILIMANJARO GUIDES BY AFRICANMECCA - OUR TRUSTED ANGELS & LEADERS

Uhuru Trails by AfricanMecca trust their clients to the care of some of the best experienced Kilimanjaro mountain guides in the Tanzanian travel industry. These hardy men love their work, take pride in their knowledge of the mountain and are constantly refining their understanding and skills to assure their clients of the most informed, competent and caring registered guide escorts available for their trekking tour of the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

Our team guide leaders have between 10 and 20 years’ experience of the best way to succeed in climbing Kilimanjaro, which they have done many hundreds of times. An average of 150 plus climbs for those with 10 years of experience and over 250 climbs for those with 15 to 20 years plus years of mounting Kilimanjaro. They know and respect their motherland mountain, and they also understand and respect the trekkers’ needs, strengths and weaknesses on high altitude.

They are trained in mountaineering skills, First Aid, recognition and treatment of altitude sickness, mountain rescue and basic survival techniques. They are charismatic motivators, capable of eliciting confidence and best ever performances from clients and crew alike. They are excellent communicators, reliable decision makers and cheerful companions, strong, brave and delighted to welcome you to their world.

As guides, they do far more than simply follow a foot trail. They have pioneered and dynamically adapted increasingly safe and respected trails, applying their knowledge and hard-won experience to delivering the best possible rates of success and enjoyment in the ascent of the highest stand-alone mountain in the world.

Since this is paradoxically one of the few major peaks which do not need specialized climbing skills, it is open to a wide range of hikers, from older children to young-at-heart pensioners. Accordingly, guides need people skills of a high order.

With a wide range of interests amongst their clientele, they need to be experts on each of the progressive habitat zones. These begin in farmland, move through tropical forest and upland heath to alpine desert, rocky ridges and scree to arctic glaciers and snowfields. They know their wildlife, including mammals, reptiles, birds, insects and flora. They will tell you about geological features, the unique, self-generated weather patterns of the strato-volcano and its history.

They are skilled in assessing the mental and physical effects of changing climate and altitude on their charges and capable of meeting any demands. In an emergency, your guides will see that you are treated appropriately, being trained in the use of oxygen equipment and in touch with rescue and medical services. If necessary, they will get you off the mountain, fast.

It is a high altitude responder guide’s job, normally the head guide primary responsibility, to assess the situation, constantly reviewing the physical and emotional state of the party, the weather, the numbers of other people on the trail, the pace of your ascent, altitude and distance to rest stops and campsites, as well as the logistics of transporting necessary supplies and equipment, setting up camps and providing food and water. He will monitor what you eat and drink, how you sleep, your mood and fatigue levels, and whether you are breathless, nauseous or suffering from headaches due to AMS.

All these factors need revision and adjustment as you progress, to ensure that your Mt. Kilimanjaro trekking vacation is truly a magical life-enhancing triumph, away from the stresses of city living, and not an ordeal you have to endure. These are complex computations for someone who is experiencing the same hazards and difficulties, the same extremes of climate and hardships as you.

AfricanMecca team guides can identify potential hazards, loose rocks or scree, slippery terrain, melting ice, changes in wind and weather, and teach you new techniques to deal with these, even to guiding your feet if you feel unsafe on the barrier wall or glissading arm in arm with you down a daunting scree slope.

In close companionship on this Kilimanjaro safari, you will exchange mutually fascinating information about yourselves, your cultures, your daily lives and the way you see your world. You and your guides are a symbiotic unit, literally living together through one of the most challenging adventures of your lifetime.

One of the most mind-boggling achievements on a Tanzanian trekking expedition is the production of tasty hot meals in the very challenging conditions of a Mt. Kilimanjaro high-altitude climb.
