GUIDE ON LAKE EYASI IN TANZANIA

In the southwest corner of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the beautiful Lake Eyasi, a soda lake that is fed by the Sibiti and Baray Rivers. Visiting the Eyasi lake is a different type of safari experience from those that you may be familiar with from your other Tanzania wilderness excursions with AfricanMecca.

The region around Eyasi is the home of the Hadzabe and Datoga communities who continue their ancient lifestyle of hunting-gathering and pastoralism respectively. The pace and experiences are much more tranquil, giving you plenty of time to absorb the natural setting of the 405-square mile (1050 sq. km) lake that is situated at 3400 feet above sea level.

Located in one of the oldest sections of the Eastern Rift Valley, Lake Eyasi is near many of the region’s off-beat landmarks, such as Oldeani Mountain on the northeast Ngorongoro part of the lake, the swampy valley of Yaeda to the southeast and Serengeti just north. In contrast to the savannah and arid plains of other parts of northern Tanzania, Lake Eyasi offers tall palm trees along its shores and a variety of avi-fauna, such as Fischer’s lovebird, flamingo, pelican, spurfowl, stork, barbet, weaver and many others.

Tindiga Tented Camp and Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp are the recommended options. At both of these camps, you have all of the basic furnishings and non-frill amenities that you need for an Eyasi tour.

Our guests primarily visit Lake Eyasi for its cultural experiences combined with a birding safari excursion, and many also prefer the relatively low number of tourists that visit this outback area.

An expedition to northern Tanzania's Lake Eyasi is an admirable choice anytime during the year due to the variable water levels, but there are some subtle variations that you may want to consider.

EAST AFRICA SAFARI BOOKING TRIP IDEA FOR LAKE EYASI IN NORTHERN TANZANIA

When visiting Lake Eyasi (Great Rift Valley Lake), we recommend combining it with your Northern Tanzania safari to Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti (wildebeest migration). End your trip with a Swahili cultural tour and beach holiday in Zanzibar.

You may optionally extend out to offbeat parks in Southern and Western Tanzania such as Nyerere (Selous), Ruaha or Katavi ending with a chimpanzee trekking safari at Gombe or Mahale by the relaxing Lake Tanganyika.
