ARRIVAL DAY 1 - OVERNIGHT AT MOUNTAIN INN – ALTITUDE: 800 METERS
Your Tanzanian mountain trip begins in Moshi town after your arrival pickup from Kilimanjaro International Airport or even Arusha Airport, a commercial hub where English is spoken amidst international arrivals, although a few words of Swahili are much appreciated. You also have the option of staying in Arusha if you prefer. Mountain Inn is located in the suburbs of the town, and contains everything you will need for the night before you set out to climb the Mount Meru. You are advised for safety not to walk in town at night. Your pre-climb briefing reminds you of anything you might still need for your Mount Meru trekking adventure. Sort your mountain gear into two packs. Leave anything unnecessary in safe storage at the hotel. Your daily needs fit into a medium backpack, including personal documents and money, camera, personal medical kit and supplies, to which you will add water and a packed lunch provided to you. Keep your walking boots, trekking poles, gaiters etc. to wear with light clothing. Pack no more than 15 kilos (33 lbs) for your porter to carry. This will include sleeping bag and ground mat, warm clothing for the higher mountain zones, any unrequired equipment, non-essential belongings and any snack bars or energy drink powders stock that you wish to take. You will be able to make good most deficiencies at the hotel climbing equipment hire center before enjoying an appetizing evening meal and turning in early for a comfortable night’s sleep at Mountain Inn before an early morning start on your ambitious African highlands safari expedition on to the Meru in Arusha National Park.
DAY 2 - OVERNIGHT AT MIRIAKAMBA HUT – ALTITUDE: 2514 METERSAn early drive from Moshi takes you to Arusha National Park. There is only one route to the summit, beginning at Momella Gate at 1500 meters, with verdant views of lush grassland and lakes. A gentle climb through luxuriant evergreen forest takes you to the bridge across the Ngare Nanyuki River. This section of your Tanzanian trekking adventure is where you may see elephants, impalas, warthogs with zebras, reedbucks, and even possibly grazing hippopotamus if the weather is cool. The forest zone begins at around 2000 meters. A thirty minute hiking detour off the main trail will take you to a magnificent waterfall in a bird-watcher’s paradise. Amidst colobus and Skye’s monkeys, the trail goes beneath Fig Tree Arch, a huge living tree straddling the route, draped with adventitious parasitic fig tree roots. A five-hour walk takes you to Miriakamba Hut for your overnight stop at 2514 meters. There are cottages with bunk beds, squat toilet facilities, cold running water and solar electric lighting. The evening views are splendid, especially of the multi-hued Momella Lakes, far below, colored by plankton that feeds thousands of pink flamingos.
DAY 3 - OVERNIGHT AT SADDLE HUT – ALTITUDE: 3500 METERS
The trail climbs very steeply through verdant forest glades, ideal for rest breaks. Watch where you put your feet. You do not want to step into marching armies of soldier ants that climb to strategic points inside your clothing before beginning to bite all at the same time. Nor do you want to slip in a pile of fresh ungulate dung. From Elephant Ridge (Mgongo wa Tembo), when the mist clears, there are wonderful views of forest and plain. Higher still, spidery trees festooned with Spanish moss give way to heathland with giant heather (read more on top 10 reasons to trek with Uhuru Trails). After four hours, you reach Saddle Hut. Relax for the afternoon or take a two-hour hike to the 3794 summit of Little Meru with spectacular views of the Rift valley. It can get cold at this height, so you will need a warm fleece, hat and gloves. Saddle Hut at 3500 meters has smaller, locking rooms with separate facilities for porters and guests.
DAY 4 - OVERNIGHT AT MIRIAKAMBA HUT – ALTITUDE: 2514 METERSA very early morning start takes you steeply up to Rhino Point at 3800 meters. The views of distant Kilimanjaro are unforgettable at first light. For those fearless and sure-footed adventurers who want to experience one of the most beautiful African mountain treks, just continue to Socialist Peak (4566 meters) along a perilous ridge between sheer cliff walls dropping 1500 meters to the crater floor. The rocks are marked green to indicate the safe route which scrambles up and down over a rock bridge, through rocks, ash and sand. It is slow and fatiguing but sunrise behind Mount Kilimanjaro reveals an unbelievable vista of pink and purple cloud stretching from beneath your feet to the sky island of the shining mountain, floating between the heaven and earth over 45 miles (72 kilometers) away. The last hour may not be possible in high winds or icy conditions. Total ascent trek time to the summit will be five to six hours and another four to five hours of descent. A steep descent from the summit at 4566 meters brings you back to Saddle Hut for a substantial lunch, then down to have dinner and stay overnight again at Miriakamba Hut.
DAY 5 - OVERNIGHT AT MOUNTAIN INN – ALTITUDE: 800 METERS
Descend to the foothills of Mount Meru back to Momella Gate. Here, you will receive your certificate of achievement for summiting the volcanic mountain. When you are all assembled, enjoy a last rousing rendition of the Tanzania song, in which the chorus leader may have included a special mention of each of your team by name and the cheerful comment, “Tanzania Hakuna Matata”, “Tanzania, No Worries”! Before you are driven back to Mountain Inn, your Moshi base hotel, the tipping ceremony gives your support team recognition for their cheerful and devoted companionship during this challenging East African climbing tour. What bliss to luxuriate in a long, hot shower, your first in many days. You can also have a swim, a massage and a celebratory dinner in multicultural style, a suitable ending to your Tanzanian highlands holiday safari. Leaving Arusha, you will really begin to appreciate the spectacle of Mount Meru from a distance.
DAY 6 - DEPARTURE DAY - AIRPORT TRANSFER OR CONTINUE ON AN OPTIONAL TREK OF KILIMANJARO OR EVEN A WILDLIFE SAFARI WITH AFRICANMECCAWake up at your own time at your Moshi base accommodation but in time for breakfast, check out and transfer to the airport for your flight back home, continue onto climbing Kilimanjaro or for those trekkers who are on a Tanzania wildlife safari with AfricanMecca, you will be picked up by your safari guide and continue on with your travels in Tanzania or the others parts of Africa.

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
