GUIDE ON OLIVER’S CAMP IN TANZANIA

Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Oliver’s Camp

Oliver’s Camp in Tarangire National Park - northern Tanzania, offers a highly authentic wilderness experience, based on the rustically luxurious pioneering standards of the earliest East African safaris. Set in the south eastern side of Tarangire, close to Silale Swamp, home to the rare Leptailurus Serval and Bohor Reedbuck, Oliver’s Camp holds a unique authority to conduct professionally guided walking safaris and fly-camping, granted for exemplary guiding with certificates of sustainability and excellence awarded over many years.

Oliver’s Camp safaris are designed for discerning travelers who seek to recapture the ambience of the lost African wild, redolent with mud, dry grass and red earth, and fraught with the unexpected. Far from the modern world, cosseted in a lifestyle reminiscent of Colonial rule, teeming with wildlife and rich with opportunity, today’s trailblazer can rediscover themselves and their roots in comfort and safety, spiced with the high adventure of a bygone age, whilst protecting the ecology and supporting local communities in the immediate Tarangire park radius.

Enjoy the wild in all its moods on your tour in Tarangire with AfricanMecca, with hundreds of lumbering elephant throughout the year, breeding herds of zebra, wildebeest and gazelle in February, and rich avian populations from November to June. In the dry, from July to November, when hundreds of thousands of migratory ungulates crowd the shrinking water courses, look out for lion, leopard and python lying in wait along tree branches for their prey to come to them.

Accommodation At Oliver’s Camp

After the drive into camp at the start of your AfricanMecca tour in Tanzania, you are welcomed with cold towels and fruit juice before being shown your delightful accommodation. Oliver’s Camp comprises of 10 spacious and airy en-suite safari tents furnished with luxurious simplicity in earth tones, with bedside lamps, heavy, carved wood furniture and opulent rugs, offset against the Spartan efficiency of bush showers, bush cooking and campfire circles (read more on other places to stay in Tarangire).

The tents are set well apart for privacy, with king-size beds, lockable storage, writing desk and decked verandah with safari sunbeds and a center table overlooking the woodland. Bathrooms feature flush toilets, large rectangular mirrors, complimentary toiletries, and bottled water. An alarm clock may also be requested – courtesy of morning bird chirps and tweets. Room service and laundry are standard, with daily cleaning and nightly turn-down. In colder seasons, when nights are chilly on your Tarangire trip, a hot water bottle is slipped between your sheets.

The camp welcomes less mobile guests and children over 6 years old on their holiday in Africa, but they are not allowed to wander alone. Guests on foot are accompanied at all times by armed guards, guides or park rangers whether in camp or on a walk. A central bar and dining room provides old-fashioned hospitality with a library including fascinating old journals as well as internet connections and recharging points for cameras and batteries. Twice-daily or full day game-viewing drives using an exclusive private camp vehicle is an extra option in addition to private guided walking safaris and overnight fly-camping.

Safari At Oliver’s Camp

A Tanzanian vacation visit in this remote African corner of Tarangire – see map, is a life-changing event, whether on foot or in four-wheel-drive game-viewing vehicles. Your AfricanMecca guides are the best available to introduce you to the wonders of the bush. Radio links make it possible to exchange tracking information with other favored guides of the same caliber to ensure the best possible range of sightings.

On foot, you will be introduced to the finer points of the fragile ecology of this wild-life paradise, and you will be able to watch herds of elephant, hundreds strong, mothers, babies, and ancient tuskers ambling in line through tall and short grasses. Zebra abound, with gentle-eyed giraffe and other hooved and horned game, but predators tend to avoid you unless obscured.

To experience true freedom and closeness to the natural world, overnight fly camping stops can be booked as part of a walking safari tour in Africa when staying at Oliver’s Camp. In a jeep, on or off road, you will meet lions by day or even night, herds of migratory buffalo and wildebeest, and an unbelievable variety of wet and dry land mammals and birds in this densely packed wildlife ecology.

Night drives are also privileged sources of delight as nocturnal predators such as leopard and striped hyena follow ruminants to waterholes and wallows. In acacia woodlands, you may spot a huge-eyed bush-baby, crested porcupine, tree hyrax, or bat-eared fox while aardvark, pangolin and honey badgers roam around termite mini-mountains, and under the arms of spreading giant baobab trees, civet and white-tailed mongoose will complete the secret enchantment of an African night.

Dining At Oliver’s Camp

Dining at Oliver’s Camp is not the least of your Tanzanian safari treats. Food is fresh, locally sourced and of impeccable quality, well cooked and well presented. A morning wake-up call with freshly brewed tea or coffee served in your tent is the prelude to breakfast, cereals, fruit, cheese, fresh bread while toast, eggs, fried potatoes are cooked to order outdoors in the bush kitchen.

Packed breakfasts or lunches are a convenient option for avid explorers bent on an early start or full day to their game spotting in comfortable and custom 4x4 safari vehicle with raised roofs for panoramic viewing. Hot lunch is served upon your return. A welcome early afternoon nap is followed by discussion of objectives for a late afternoon game drive, possibly ending with sundowner cocktails around a camp fire as the setting sun gilds the plains, violet shadows slink along the river valley, and the evening sky turns from pink to purple before a dazzle of stars fixes an iconic memory of trips in Africa.

Dinner can be served in the dining room, lit by lanterns and flickering candles, or at dedicated bush dining sites with prearranged bush bars and bush kitchens where meat grills and vegetable roasts are cooked on the spot, supplemented by dishes from the main camp. A fine wine list is available with an international range of spirits, juices and other beverages to your taste. Special arrangements for AfricanMecca guests on their honeymoon or anniversary safaris are undertaken with pleasure and great flair.
