GUIDE ON RHOTIA VALLEY TENTED LODGE NEAR NGORONGORO CRATER - HIGHLANDS
Set high on a hill between the spectacular African Rift Valley and the incredible wildlife haven of Ngorongoro Crater, Rhotia Valley Tented Lodge is an utterly unique African safari accommodation, designed as a project to support the village, and especially the orphan children, of Rhotia. It is completely integrated with the local environment and provides the dual opportunity to visit the beautiful countryside of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and to experience the authentic African ambience as an honored guest in a thriving cooperative community. Three miles from the main access route to Arusha and Ngorongoro, a cluster of spacious and comfortable tents offer affordable accommodation with joyous serenity and fantastic views of sunsets over the distant escarpment. One of several African orphanages supported by Golder Trust for Orphans as a self-sustaining initiative, this project derives its income from the tented lodge as others, elsewhere, get theirs from producing honey and even geranium oil. In Rhotia, a computer class demonstrates their ability to make a real difference to lives that were formerly at subsistence level. Visitors on a Rhotia Valley Tented Lodge safari can feel good about their contribution as they vary their wildlife viewing adventures and trips to nearby places of outstanding interest and beauty, such as Ngorongoro Crater or Lake Manyara, by a fascinating visit to the thriving village and the many happy children for whom they are helping to make new lives. Rhotia Valley Tented Lodge is the perfect place to stay if you want to experience the true nature of cooperation between sustainable tourism and the Tanzanian people on your tour of Tanzania with AfricanMecca.
Accommodation At Rhotia Valley Tented LodgeRhotia Valley Tented Lodge consists of 15 thatched tents on wooden decking with spacious bedroom areas and ingeniously partitioned en-suite facilities featuring flush toilet, hot and cold running water, shower, and dresser (Read more - where else to stay in Ngorongoro). Sited on winding paths amidst lush vegetation, the tents give an illusion of perfect seclusion. The three mile, red dirt road to the lodge is an adventurous introduction to travel in real Africa. An unpretentious main lodge consists of a wide, railed verandah, furnished with wooden deck chairs and festooned with flowering creepers, a cosy hearth-side lounge with welcoming cane armchairs and settles, and a clean and simple extended dining area and bar. There are plenty of books and games to be had, with the company of half a dozen gratified cats. At 1700 feet above sea level, there is little malaria risk, where you may sit out in the morning to watch the sunrise over Mount Meru on a clear day and listen to the swelling dawn chorus. In the evening, look out over the fields and terraces of local farms to the vast Rhotia Valley, as the sun sets to give place to the sparkling glimmerings of distant Karatu town. Retire to a comfortable queen-size bed with reassuring hot-water bottle thoughtfully tucked in to take you through the unexpectedly cool night. Domestic staff are recruited from Rhotia Village and may be shy or friendly, but all will do their best to make your holiday in Africa a pleasant one that you will want to return back on safari with AfricanMecca.
Safari At Rhotia Valley Tented LodgeA Ngorongoro Crater trip in a 4 x 4 game viewing vehicle is an experience not to be beaten for the surreal scenery and dense population of tens of thousands of wildebeest, zebra and other ungulates to be found in this safe haven, together with many hundreds of other mammals, both predators and rare creatures threatened elsewhere. On the eye-opening early morning 50 minute drive to the crater entrance, you may be lucky to see nocturnal animals such as leopard returning from their overnight forays, or for late departure, impala and other animals grazing on some of the vegetation not found on the crater itself. Discuss with your skilled and enthusiastic AfricanMecca guide the best places to find the animals you most want to see when you arrive in Ngorongoro: the old tusker elephants and black-maned lions on the golden grasslands; the hippopotamus and buffalo near the marshes; monkeys and rare black rhino on the forest fringe, or stilt-legged pink flamingos in the central lake. Guides are sometimes in optional 2-way radio contact to locate events of special interest or concentrations of wildlife within the crater. Other activities you might wish to enjoy at Rhotia Valley include an enjoyable mountain bike, Tanzanian safari guided walks, either to the village, where you can visit farms and homes and learn about local traditions, or to the magnificent Ngorongoro forest with a local Ngorongoro ranger. You could visit the children in the orphanage you are supporting by choosing Rhotia Valley Tented Lodge for your safari vacation in Tanzania. The memory of their bright faces will cheer you whenever you think back to your life-affirming African Tour.
Dining At Rhotia Valley Tented LodgeFood at Rhotia Valley Tented Lodge is simple, filling but delicious. Much of it is grown in the garden behind the restaurant and prepared within a very short time of harvesting. Locally sourced farm meat and poultry, together with fish from Lake Victoria or Zanzibar, enrich a menu packed with goodness and variety. Tanzania grown tea and coffee are available together with a range of juices, beers, and spirits to order. The menu includes continental and English breakfasts, or an early morning cuppa is available before you make an early start for your Ngorongoro Crater tour, taking tasty packed lunch meals to be eaten as you explore the crater floor for the six hours allowed by conservation protocol, before returning for afternoon tea, snacks or sundowners as you relax before dinner. Or you can lunch, buffet style, at the lodge or picnic lunch on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. A hearty set dinner menu of three and four courses offers locally themed dishes such as mustard soup, pumpkin lasagna, and fried chicken with a fruit or pastry desert. Special diets can be catered by arrangement via AfricanMecca with your friendly and caring hosts at Rhotia.

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
