GUIDE ON FLAMINGO HILL CAMP IN KENYA
Located at the border of Lake Nakuru National Park, Flamingo Hill Camp, a deluxe accommodation, gives you a front row seat to one of the most spectacular avi-fauna performances in the world! Each year, one to two million flamingos arrive at the lake to feed on the algae that flourishes in the warm alkaline waters. Watching the long-legged, pink-plumed lesser and greater flamingos wade around looking for food is interesting, but when all these birds take flight, the show really begins! The spectacle has made Lake Nakuru a favorite East African travel destination for wildlife photographers and nature filmmakers. While back at Flamingo Hill Camp, you are offered 25 guest tents in a homely, welcoming setting to ensure you have a comfortable and serene tour of Lake Nakuru with AfricanMecca, and the attentive staff are very helpful and responsive to your needs. Guest tents are situated amidst landscaped campgrounds with views of the surrounding flora, trees and valley, and the quietest and most private tents are located away from the main central areas. The soothing decor, romantic four-poster beds, small writing desk and private veranda of your chalet tent reflect a fused classical safari experience with a traditional hut-style shaded structure. Few tents are catered towards families traveling together so are close to each other while the rest of the tents are minimally spaced out to afford some extra privacy. At night, your tents and common areas are low lit so as to blend in with bush and avoid the urbanization of Flamingo Hill. Electricity is available all day but somewhat limited in terms of using a blow-dryer in your tent. The minimalism of the camp, though, gives you an authentic bush vacation in Kenya.
Imagine starting your day with a freshly brewed cup of tea or coffee while watching the early activity around the campgrounds and beyond. With more than 450 bird species at your doorstep, you may also locate and identify kingfishers, long crested eagles, goliath herons and many, many more feathered resident and migratory species. Your stay at Flamingo Hill also supports environmental restoration and protection for endangered species. Spending part of your fauna-seeking holiday in Kenya at Lake Nakuru Park goes beyond just birdwatching! Beyond the lake, the park encompasses the neighboring wilderness, and you can view rescued black and white rhinos and Rothschild’s giraffes. They join zebras, buffalos, warthogs, waterbucks and other foragers, as well as lions, leopards, spotted hyenas and other stalking predators (read more on when is the best time to visit Lake Nakuru). A morning game drive into the park lets you see Thomson's and Grant's gazelles, hippos, impala, Colobus monkeys, reedbucks and many other mammals. Be sure to check the trees along the lake for leopards! Return to camp for a guided nature walk around the camp or a bit of reading in the library, and a delicious lunch rejuvenates your energy for a late day swim before afternoon tea. Wrap up your day's activities with an afternoon game drive or boating trip to Lake Naivasha with AfricanMecca before sundowners and a wonderful dinner back at Flamingo Hill Camp.
