GUIDE ON MUTAMAIYU HOUSE IN KENYA
Mutamaiyu House is a beautiful, country-house accommodation located on the Mugie Conservancy in north-western Laikipia. Thanks to its setting at an elevation of 6,000 feet, it has a pleasant ideal climate that is perfect for an all-year-round vacation in Kenya with AfricanMecca. Mount Kenya to the southeast creates a fantastic backdrop and the stunning landscape of Laikipia spreads around you with its amazing variety of wildlife -- avian, aquatic and terrestrial. Mutamaiyu House operates with the assistance of members of local communities such as Pokot, IL Dorobo, Samburu and Turkana and is committed to the conservation programs initiated in Laikipia. Sitting atop a hillside, overlooking the grasslands, Mutamaiyu is set in well-maintained lawns with olive trees everywhere. It has a central building with high makuti thatch roofs that houses a colonially chic, comfortable lounge with a fireplace, crafted curios and a collection of informative books for its discerning guests touring East Africa. The dining area is also a part of the main house and both spaces offer awesome views of a watering hole where animals gather to drink at different times of the day. Stroll through the lawns to the heated swimming pool located on the edge of a precipice. It has classic sunbeds scattered around under the shelter of white umbrellas where you can relax in the serenity with a drink from the bar and a paperback from the lodge library. Guests bush traveling in Laikipia are accommodated in 6 spacious cottages constructed with thatched roofs in African style. Each of the rooms has a private bathroom complete with bathrobes, bath and shower area. Log energies in the fireplace keep the rooms warm in the cool nights and add to their romantic ambience. Lovely woven wall hangings and paintings adorn the walls while carved knick-knacks are placed in the nooks for an artistic touch. The rooms also have a lounge space with facilities for guests to charge their electronics and some of the rooms have Wi-Fi coverage. The lodge provides laundry services every day.
Mutamaiyu House offers an all-inclusive experience so your meals are complimented with wines, beers, soft drinks and spirits, though premier drinks like Champagne attract a charge. You can also request for picnic meals in the bush. Spend your safari trip in Kenya exploring the environs in a custom-built safari vehicle with a cultured and experienced guide on board who will enlighten you with his knowledge and shows you how to trail and spot fauna through the undergrowth. Varied fauna can be found here so you might spot Grevy’s zebra grazing along with gerenuks, waterbucks, elands, Thomson’s gazelles, dik-diks, steinboks, Grant’s gazelles and many more. Beisa oryx and Jackson’s hartebeest are two ungulates that you will only see in this nook of Kenya and the area has many herds of elephants. Predators also abound and you could see lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and smaller cats among the felines along with foxes, jackals, civets, aardwolves, aardvarks and many more. Go bird watching to spot rare, rarely seen before birds or spend time on a game of golf in a secluded area of the wild surroundings; though, AfricanMecca does not prefer manmade intrusions in authentic wildlife surroundings. Do visit the third largest dam in Kenya, the Mugie Dam, to see the beautiful expansive lake created and its many inhabitants. But make sure you include a bush walk in the company of a naturalist to experience the real world of Laikipia hidden in its vast shrubland. Visit Mutamaiyu House for authentic, adventurous holiday in magical Africa.
