GUIDE ON THOMSON'S FALLS LODGE IN KENYA
Take a break from your non-stop East African road safari schedule and unwind at the economical accommodation of Thomson's Falls Lodge in Nyahururu town, located close to Kenya’s Aberdare highlands and just one hour north-east of Nakuru. The falls are part of the Ewaso Nyiro River that naturally pipes from the Aberdare Mountains range, and the soothing sound of the 243-foot waterfall will calm your nerves and rejuvenate your spirit. The mornings are especially spectacular as the soft light enhances the mist that gently showers the forest with moisture, a wonderful highlight of any photography tour of Nyahururu- Laikipia environs. View the pool below from the top of the falls, or hike down to the base of the waterfall for a unique and awe-inspiring perspective. Thomson's Falls Lodge is a small motel-like lodging that offers 32 modest, simply designed guest rooms set within gardens of plants and indigenous trees like cedar and African Olive, and some of which produce vibrant flowers. Spend your evenings watching hippos feed on papyrus plants at nearby sanctuary or simply close your eyes and listen to the sounds of the dense forest. No matter how you choose to pass your AfricanMecca vacation time at Thomson's Falls, you will feel at ease with your activity-laden travel in Kenya. The lodge is a budget-friendly choice for guests who prioritize being close to the falls and are willing to accept lower standards of service, food quality and other aspects of the accommodation. As such, you may experience staff that appear disinterested in guest needs and comfort, and the service may be slow and poor. This is also due to lack of competition as no other suitable accommodation exists close to the falls.
Built in the 1930s, the Thomson's Falls Lodge cottages need complete updating and renovation, such as new furniture, linens and towels to keep up with freshness. To ensure that you have a comfortable trip stay at Thomson's Falls, we recommend that you check the cleanliness of the sheets and blankets, as well as the bathroom drains and other plumbing fixtures. Beyond these issues, though, the lodge is satisfactory. Guest rooms overlook the gorgeous gardens, and when the electricity is unreliable, the candles and kerosene lamps makeup for an involuntary, budget romantic holiday in Kenya (read more on where else to stay in Nyahururu, close to Aberdare). You may want to request a room with a fireplace to stay warm as the only other source of heat is warm water bottles in your bed. Meals are served buffet-style, and vegetarians may find the options too limited. The lack of modern conveniences may escape your thoughts when you visit the hippo sanctuary or traverse the forest with a guide to see chameleons, baboons, Colobus monkeys and other smaller animals. Just a 15-minute drive from the lodge is Lake Olbolosat for shore walks, photography, bird watching and trout fishing. AfricanMecca Safaris can also arrange visits to Solio Ranch, Lake Nakuru and Aberdare National Parks and Ol Pejeta Sweetwaters Conservancy.
