Pole Pole Bungalow Resort - Mafia Island

The Pole Pole (pronounced pohleh pohleh) Bungalow Resort located on the shores of Mafia Island Marine Park is a new kind of accommodation. Consisting of only ten bungalows, the accommodation promises personal attention and service while conducting its operations in an ecologically conscientious manner. The accommodation epitomizes the Kiswahili words of "take it easy", which really translates to Pole Pole.

Mafia Island is approximately 30 miles off the Tanzanian coast, about 45 minutes by air from Dar es Salaam and one hour from the Selous Game Reserve and Zanzibar Island.

Tell Me More About Pole Pole Bungalow Resort Located On Mafia Island, as an Indian Ocean Island Beach Accommodation in Tanzania

Pole Pole Bungalow Resort, owned by a young Italian couple - Massimo and Katia, is a new kind of luxury travel experience that combines the principles of eco-tourism, a small resort setting and one of the most pristine and exotic environments in the world.
The ten roomy bungalows with wide verandas looking onto the sea are built entirely out of wood and raised on stilts to ensure the maximum comfort for the guests.
The two categories of room types include:

Luxury Bungalow: elegant and spacious chalets, set among the coconut trees, overlooking a bay and the magnificent Chole and Juani Islands. The rooms are furnished with carved and antique pieces. Twin and double beds are available and another bed, for a child or a third person, can be provided. The large private verandahs are furnished with a Zanzibari bed, chairs, table and an armchair. Each chalet has a spacious en-suite bathroom; there are two overhead fans, one on the verandah and one in the bedroom.

Sensation Bungalow: Beach bungalows, smaller than the luxury ones, but still with comfort and their own charm. They are made of wood and makuti (coconut palm leaves) and are locally furnished with external camp like toilets and showers. The feature of these bungalows is the proximity to the shore: 5 meters.

The room floors are made out of hard woods, the furniture from mahogany and the door and window frames from doussi.
The beds have wooden slats and high quality spring mattresses. All linen is imported from Italy. Bathrooms have double washbasins, king-size showers, bidets and toilets.
Laundry is available at Pole Pole at no extra cost.

Culinary and Dining Experience At Pole Pole Bungalow Resort Located On Mafia Island

The Pole Pole cuisine is a combination of diverse culinary traditions and cultures, with an Italian style touch of class. Seafood, homemade pasta and delicious fresh fruit ice cream are the specialties. A Swahili dinner is served once per week or on request.  Most of the food served is organically grown and bought on the island to help local fisherman and farmers benefit from tourism development.
Breakfast is international style with fresh fruit juice, seasonal fresh fruits, crepes, toasted bread, traditional homemade j am and honey, butter, tea and eggs.
A selection of beverages and cold drinks are always available at the bar, which remains open until guests have retired.

Relaxation Experience and Activities At Pole Pole Bungalow Resort Located On Mafia Island

Relax on the beach.
Diving: Mafia Island Marine Park is home to one of the finest marine life. The clear and calm waters make the dive even more spectacular. The diving center at Pole Pole Bungalow Resort is located next to the reception. Dive sites for beginners are easy and shallow. The courses offered extend to qualified divers who would like to continue developing their underwater education.
Take a trip to Maweni, where coral rocks emerge from the bay surrounded by an extremely interesting reef and can be reached even by less expert swimmers.
Take a trip to Fungo Marimbani, a strip of dazzling white sand, which appears during low tide, surrounded by crystal-clear water.
Visit Chole Island. The oldest, still inhabited settlement in the archipelago, with the ruins of some Arab and Indian Merchant buildings used by the Germans during the First World War. Chole Island is covered by extremely varied lush vegetation. You can visit a shipyard where traditional construction methods are still used to build dhows, the typical East African sailing boat. Among the island's curiosities are a number of trees containing colonies of Comoro bats, a protected species of fruit eating "flying foxes".
Visit Juani Blue Lagoon. Along channel linking the huge inland bay with the open sea bisects the southern point of Juani. At the end of the channel is an enormous natural swimming pool whose level varies according to the tides. After a short walk, you can enjoy its clear waters. The area can only be reached by boat during high tide for a few hours a day, but those who decide to trek from Kua will witness a natural phenomenon only known to few people: during low tide the whole channel is drained of water creating an extraordinary sight with a view of the ocean waves breaking on the reef in the background. The entire area belongs to a special Archipelago project for the protection of its wildlife and vegetation. A number of basic structures are being built and will allow one- or two-night flying camps to be organized upon request.
Visit Zanzibar and Pemba Island.
Safaris in Tanzania visiting Selous, Ruaha, Serengeti, Kilimanjaro and Ngorongoro Reserves and Parks.
Fly to Mombasa and Lamu Island, Kenya to experience culture and history.
Safaris in Kenya visiting Samburu, Shaba, Mount Kenya, Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Nairobi Parks and Reserves.
