Lekerruki Conservancy Area - Laikipia - Kenya Safari
Eco-Tourism Development at Lekurruki Conservation Area In Laikipia, Northern Kenya
As they witness the success of Il Ngwesi and Namunyak, other group-ranches are becoming more receptive to the concept of wildlife management. Lewa Wildlife Conservancy targeted Lekurmki, a 15,000-acre group-ranch northeast of Il Ngwesi with a population of 500 families. Funding of
$100,000 has been supplied by Michael Dyer at Borana, a neighboring ranch.
The company registered itself as the Lekurruki Community Conservation Lodge and has built a lodge in 2001 using Il Ngwesi as a model. The first objective is to educate the group-ranch members on the sustainable use of wildlife resources, showing them how animals can be a source of income. The long-term objective is to open up the migration corridor and to ensure greater safety for the wildlife that use it on their way to the north.
